I had my cable break right at the plate that holds the rim....i used 2 cable clamps...1 about 3 inches up and then u-shaped the cable to the 2nd clamp and put heavy fuel hose over it so the metal wont touch teh cable anymore...been holding good...

Some where in one of my pics.... I'll have to dig it up, I have put a carriadge bolt through the lip on the bed and have mounted a stand up spare, it sits well enough to the inside that I have room for plywood and most any thing else, where it does pose a problem would be, is if you tow a goose neck or 5th wheel. When I tow I usually lay it down under the tool box.

Your 97 had the winch equipment? My 95 is the old style all-thread with cross bar bracket.
