Somewhere between 0 and 105,000 miles (yes, I am serious, no, I'm not kidding) and the bracketry and everything for it is pretty much broken off with it (which seems to be quite common with 99 MY Fords, for some reason) I have two choices. I've been tooling around with the spare in the bed, which isn't a big deal unless you want to load plywood or something in it, then you have to take the tire out and put it back in once you've loaded. Of course, it's great for holding the load in using this method... :sweet

I was considering building an aftermarket jobber with a big wingnut that padlocks on place to hold the tire on where it is supposed to be. OR, I was considering researching whether an Excursion or an F-450 chassis model fuel tank will fit back there where the spare should be.

Does anybody know???

you could just break down and buy a new winch, for about $50...

Where's my guarantee that it isn't going to break off again? God forbid I'm towing a trailer when THAT happens!!!

Can you imagine the poor sap driving behind you when that thing cut loose..............

Worse............imagine rush hour bumper to bumper traffic going 65mph. That thing starts bouncing down the road and it would look like bumper cars as 20 vehicles tried to dodge it.

On edit: I should probably check mine.

Probably the same thing happened to your truck as happened to mine. It was not an uncommon thing for the Ford spares to break off. I don't know if they recalled them, or what, but my guess is that if anything was cut off, it was only what was left after the tire fell off somewhere.

I still can't imagine what would have happened had a trailer been in tow.

Anyway, I'll check the frame dimensions on the 99 to see if they are similar to a OBS truck, and see about that Bronco tank.

I'd still like to use an excursion tank or an F-450 tank if possible, since they would have the right pickups, sender units, etc for the guages and the fuel lines...

The winch thing is still there, the rest of the bracketry had been cut off with a torch
