Silencer Ring

A buddy of mine has mentioned this to me a couple of times. He has got a cummins with a holset turbo and has removed his silencer ring. He says that this ring is on the intake side of the turbo and just makes it whistle louder when it is removed. I was wondering if our garret turbo's have this same thing and if we did could it be removed without doing any harm. Thanks

This is actually not an uncommon thing in current vehicle manufacturing, but it is the first time I've heard about it on a turbocharged diesel. What they do is put a restriction in the intake (a "ring") which quiets the intake noises considerably, and has no other appreciable value whatsoever. My Dad's mtorhome wiht the 460 had these, we pulled them off and it was like a whole new rig, ran cooler, stronger, etc. It is for the whiners that say "(snivel snivel) MY TRUCK IS TOO LOUD!! (snivel, whine)" I think it is stupid, but who the heck am I?

Only a communist would want to reduce the whine of their turbo. It is a beautiful sound.

I know it is a beautiful sound, that's why I was wanting more of it. I have another quick question for ya. What makes my early 99 and my dads' late 99 sound so much different?

Different compressor wheel. You can get the old wheel for your turbo and they will sound the same. I bought mine at blackclouddiesel.com when I had my stock turbo on.

I thought the early 99 came with a wheel similar to the Wicked wheel. Then the later 99 didn't or something like that. Comparing the two types of trucks, am I limited at all?
