I bought an 05 Ranger last year. Best thing I ever did. The Super Duty only see's the light of day when I need to plow snow, or tow something. Or when I go somewhere nice.:sly The Ranger averages 18-20 MPG, which is a hell of a lot better than any PSD!

If you can come out of this with NO truck payment, and the f-150, your leagues ahead.

Fuel prices will probably not go down in the very near future. Buy what ever vehicle that you can afford and pay cash for it, keeping in mind what you need a vehicle for. If it is just for transportation, then something that gets good mileage and is low maintenance. Later on, when you get more money for toys, you can again purchase a PSD or other fun vehicle. At least this is how the wife and I did it when we first got married. We bought used, low mileage cars that we could pay cash for, or have very low payments.
The next few years might see some bumps in the financial side of things, so it might be wise to be frugal for awhile. Unemployment is at a all time high in our area, and this trend seems to be spreading across the nation.
Good luck in what ever you do.

Well, we bought the fiance a brand-new Suzuki Arie (sp?) wagaon last year brand new for $15k out the door with a 70k/7yr warranty. gets an average of 27mpg around town and 32mpg hwy. $10 or less and I change the oil myself every 7,500mi and rotate tires myself. We've spent $0 on that car other than Fuel, Oil & fiters.... OH, and we paid $130 to tint it. She saves a boat load of money with no payment and that kind of car. However, I know i needs to get out from under the PSD at this time before I get hurt. I really do need some sort of a truck b/c of my lifestyle; fixing up old houses and in the construction business, and we mountain bike on the weekends and don't need to buy a $400 bike rack. I agree older (2005ish) TDI Vw's are way to expensive for an older car whos maintance costs are very high; to much for an old car bottom line! Wouldnt mind a ranger, however I think the fuel savings vs a F150 wouldn't be much? :dunno the window sticker says like +1-2mpg compare to the 150's. bottom line is I need/want a truck, and can't afford a payment, and my budget is about $23k cash.

Honestly it sounds to me like getting out of the payment is paramount to getting out of the fuel bill as the F-150 wont give you great gains in that market. So................ with that said, just becase you have $23k to blow does that mean you NEED to blow $23k? Spend $5k or $6k on a little bit older model and bank the other $17k, use it as your down payment on your 2010 PSD.

That is true guys, maybe I should go older on a truck. Make my Budget like $15k. See what that buys for a decent used truck.

The F-150 wont save you enough at the end of the month in fuel savings alone to justify it over the PSD.

as for the 250-150 swap...i dont think youll see an
improvement in mpg enough to make any difference when i owned my 5.0 f150 xtra cab i was lucky to get 15 on the highway and i often averaged 11 around town.

going from the 250 to a 5.4 150 isnt going to save you much on the fuel end.

Honestly it sounds to me like getting out of the payment is paramount to getting out of the fuel bill as the F-150 wont give you great gains in that market.

Good advice up there. I have a 05' F150 and a PSD. I can tell you that the PSD is way more economical to drive then the F150. The cheaper unleaded fuel does not make up for the lousy mileage that the newer F150's get. We might get 12 during the summer and as low as 10 during the winter with the F150. Out on the highway the F150 does get a little better as long as you don't hook up a trailer or put a load in the bed. I own six Ford vehicles and have been brand loyal for years but I must say if you are set on a half ton truck Toyota gets the best mpg with Chevy close behind. Ford half ton trucks are very expensive to drive..

I'm not swapping the 250 to a 150 for MPG increase. My main goal is to have a truck I own outright. Regular gas in Tampa is $3.10/gal. Diesel is $3.99/gal, which is a perk at the moment, but still a perk. But like I said, I just want a truck that I own outright with no payment, and the insurance will go down significatnly per month also (even though I pay every 6mo for the cheaper rate). oil change on the 150 will cost me $20, my PSD oil changes are $60. That's doing it myself. and I came to the conclusion I have way to much money in my truck to just be sitting outside 24/7. We Wax my girl's car every 6-8 months and it looks spanky clean for months on end. I spend a full 8hr sunday washing and detailing my truck and 1wk later it's wrecked. and I have to wax it every 2 months. FL sun is rough. I just did the math on owning my truck vs a paid off 150. My savings would be $460/mo not including the fuel cost difference. If you include the current MPG/Price differences I'd save $520/mo. and I'd get to park the F150 in the garage

$500 a month is $500 a month. Sounds like you have the math figured out. Having a paid for truck has to be better than payments.
