Running issues after straight piping.

I had the cat and muffler removed and a 3.5" pipe welded in it's place onThursday. The truck ran fine the rest of the day (only drove around town) Friday I drove about 100 miles on a trip and just before I arrived I felt what I would describe as a "surge" on the freeway. (the truck suddenly powered up) Then when I got off the freeway I noticed it again a few times. I parked and shut the truck off to go in the store, came back out went to start it and it started and died twice. The 3rd time it was fine. The next morning the truck ran fine for the 100 mile trip back home.

Saturday It surged a couple times again and also did the start and die thing. Today I made a 500 mile trip and the "surging" continued on several occasions. At one point I stopped in traffic and the idle dropped down and I was afraid it was going to die.

To be more specific the "surge" felt like if you were to suddenly tap the go pedal for a second.

This truck has ran flawlessly until friday morning... Is it possible for the exhaust work to cause such an issue?

Maybe an EBP sensor?

Removing the cat and muffler should not have an effect on the way the truck runs beside making the exhaust flow better. You have an intermittent problem so the exhaust couldn't be the problem. You're exhast back pressure sensor runs you're exhaust back pressure valve for warm up on cold days

The 6.0 has no ebpv, like the 7.3.

I'm running a strait pipe on mine, and it comes out ahead of the rear tire. Other than being fairly loud when cold, I have seen no performance problems, or increases for that matter. About the only thing I noticed is in tow haul mode when it drops a gear for braking, it doesn't slow down as much.

If they put a downpipe on it, maybe somebody hit something under the hood around the turbo, and knocked some wiring loose.

The down pipe wasn't touched. Some people seem to think these symptoms might be due to a bad ICP sensor...

You mentioned you had the new exhaust welded in. Did you disconnect the battery when welding? I have known of a few heavy trucks that once welded had blown a few sensors.

Miraculously the problem has seemed to have gone away... I plugged the egr back in. I then ran the truck up to normal operating temp, turned the key off then on for 5 seconds...twice. Then started it and let it idle for 5 minutes. ( I read about this procedure somewhere) The problem seems to have gone away and the CEL has gone off. I believe the problem had something to do with the EGR...
