Ok, I have a problem with tire size and rim width. This thread has prompted me to ask questions
I was "talked" into purchasing 285/75-16 Tires from Tire Kingdom about a year or so ago. Well after driving on them at the recommended tire pressure, I found that stopping on wet pavement was next to impossible, and stopping on dry pavement wasn't very good either. Took me about two weeks to find this out.

To make a long story a little shorter, the bottom line is that I have to run about 32 lbs of air to keep the tires flat on the pavement. The tire was designed for 8.5 to 10 inch rims, so to keep them from being like a donut with only 2" on the pavement at recommended air pressure I run them at 32 lbs.

What are the largest tires my stock rims will accept?
or in other words...
What are the width dimensions requirements of some of the more popular tires? (middle of the road pricewise) Not the high dollar ones... an elephant stepped on my pocket book:(

Thanks,
RoReRi

Your stock rims are designed to run 235/85R16 tires. If you don't want to change the air pressure then you should probably stick with something the same width. Problem with sticking with the same width is you can only go shorter not taller. A 265/75R16 is within .2" in height but wider. A 215/85R16 is about the same width as a 235 but they are 1" shorter. If you go taller then you go wider and you don't seem to want to lower the pressure for a wider tire. BF Goodrich and Dunlop do make a 255/85R16 that is 33.3" tall (1.3" taller than a 235) but they are only about .5" wider and are rated for a 7" rim.

I run 315/75-16's which are way bigger than your 285's and don't have any trouble at all. Wider tire + lower pressure = better ride :sweet

Are you still running the factory stock Al. alloy rims? The ones with the "bullet" holes?

Thanks, RoReRi

Kevin,

I've often contemplated running a wider tire (still on the stock 235/85's) but dont have an inkling to go as big as 315's...... with the 315's aired down I know you get a nice ride but dont you compromise alot of load capacity?

What load? :D When I do pack a load(once in a while)I air the tires up. The load flattens them out just like the low pressure does.

My next set will be BFGoodrich Mud Terrain LT255/85R16/D Tall and narrow :sweet Wide is not always good especially on snow and ice.
