I have a TWD , so it appears that from the numbers you found that the $1,500 may not be to far out of line. Thanks.

TWD?

The rear axle should be the Dana S-135. $1500 to regear and the R&R is definatly not out of line. the 3rd member needs to be removed to regear. That should be a rear abs axle as well. Changing ratios can put the tone ring out of alignment for the sensor. Just double check with him on the abs sensor and regear if you have one.

i havn't experienced personally a 550 gear change but that ring and pinion is huge! and i am sure the parts are much more than the standard sterling 10.5 so you have to take that into acount when i do axles on class A trucks it cost about double what they quoted you...

another thing. that ring gear is probably rivited like he said, but a 80 ton press will pop them right out and they also make bolt kits to replace the rivets.

Jopes,
Your correct. The tone ring did give him a problem. He had to machine the carrier slightly to bring the ring into alignment with the ABS sensor. I have put about 400 miles on it so far and it is much nicer to drive than before. The motor isn't screaming so loud you can't talk in the cab and I have picked up 3.5 mpg on the first tank. I realy can't say I have noticed any negative regarding the performance. It still has plenty of get up and go and the rpm's have dropped about 600 at 65mph.

I did the 4:88 to 4:10 gears a few years ago in my F450 with a Dana 80.
I had the gears from a new truck cost me $50 and I had a locker installed at the same time and the total cost was $1500 :sweet

It has been one of the best mods I have done :sly :sly

Currently I am driving the F 550 on the weekend only, but I will be using it to tow a large 5'r. So far I am very pleased with the regearing. Fuel economy has gone up and the truck is much quieter since the motor isn't screaming all the time. :thumbs

4.10's is enough to get a big 5er and F550 going? I'd think that'd be like towing with my truck w/ 3.28's or something.

Hope it works out for you!

There are a ton of F-350's out there pulling big trailers of all types with 4:10's, so I don't expect any problems.
