They do it in California on a random basis. Usually at the scales. I have been pulled into a scale and checked in a rented truck.

I'm showing my ignorance here, but how would they know to stop you and check your tank? Smell? Fumes? Smoke?

Like already said it's random around here. Weigh stations, the mobile scale unit will do it too. I've never seen or been told of a normal patrol car doing it.

The Department of Revenue does the testing here. They set up a roadside stop usually near the edge of town and pull over all diesel vehicles and dip the tanks. You would be surprised by the number that have red fuel in them.

Yeah, it's really funny how they get pissed when we "steal" from them...

Personally I wouldn't care, if they used the money to fix the damn roads around Pittsburgh. What a joke.

If it's any consolation, plead ignorance and tell them you were in the South RIGHT AFTER KATRINA. Practically every diesel pump was dispensing red fuel because that was all there was to be had. The feds gave a special exemption for 45 days, so long as the taxes were collected at the pump, the DOT and troopers were supposed to leave you alone. Yes, they DO inspect our diesel pickup trucks randomly. Just drive down the interstate by a weigh station in Florida, occasionally you will see temporary signs telling motorists driving rental trucks, rental trailers, vans, and pickups to enter the weigh station. As an added bonus, the DOT guys dip the tanks of diesel vehicles at random. Guess who got picked?

I've gotta believe that a certain amount of cross-contamination occurs either at the refinery, or in the transportation of the fuel to the gas station. Recently posted a question about "Water in Fuel" and journeyed beneath to drain her. To my surprise  RED floating around (30%) of the drained (condensate). I'm from the suburbs North of Detroit - big name gas stations. Someones mixing through cross-contamination, or trying to make a buck is my guess. Try and explain that to the authorities !

Just keep your fuel receipts and you will be OK. They are interested in the taxes being paid.
