It's important to remember that heat wont cause the metal damage on it 's own, the heat destroys the seals on the shaft and that causes the oil to blow by the seal area and cause lack of lubrication. The idle time is for circulation of the hot oil that is in the turbo to be circulated "out" of the turbo, and allows the shaft a chance to cool so that the oil doesn't get burned onto it. The shaft of the turbo can get so hot that once flow stops, the oil burns onto the shaft and causes a crusty buildup that "grinds" the oil seals down on the next startup. Most just let the engine run for 3-5 min, and cooled down to 300-400 degrees every time before shutoff.
