The VSS picks up magnetic RPM data from the Ring Gear, similar to the way the CPS operates. The VSS data, via the PCM, then controls/effects (along with other sensor data inputs) the proper function and operation of your:

1. Transmission (Auto)

2. ABS

3. Cruise Control

4. Speedometer

And depending on equipment options.. Other.. In Gear, In Motion systems.

When any of the above begin to malfunction, the VSS can often be the culprit. It's Magnet. It can loose it's magnetic strength. And it can also get dirty, from metal particles picked up from normal ( or Abnormal ) Ring & Pinion gear wear.

It's just a $25.00 part, 30 minutes to replace.. and a good place to start Trouble Shooting for "In Motion" Gremlins ?

Jus my .03 & Simply Put.
