Rear Diff Temperatures?!?

Does anyone know what temperature the rear diff's run at? I used an infrared thermometer on mine this weekend and here are the temps I saw:

Empty: 144*F
Towing 5,000 lbs for an hour: 172*F

I am asking because I am trying to decide if I want to go to the '08 finned rear diff cover.

The info passed on to me awhile back was: 195 ideal, 220 ok when towing, 250 too hot, stop to cool down. I have a Mag-Hytec rear cover on my Dana 80, and usually see around 180 to 220 towing in warm weather. I have seen a little over 220 degrees towing heavy in hot weather. the finned cover might help a little, but for regular towing in hot weather the Mag-Hytec seems to help.

why not go for the 08 cover anyway? it can be found for around $30 or $40 and it looks much better than the stock cover.

X2 250º is the danger zone.

Yes. I am in the process of polishing one for my truck. Must admit polishing all those fins are not easy.

i don't think it will fit the f-superduty axles, but it will fit the sterling 10.25. powerstrokeshop.com has them. you also need longer bolts because the alum cover is thicker

crumm, I hate to ask, what exactly are you doing polishing the aluminum cover? Am I going to need to make some mod of a new cover I have already put on to meet the standard you are setting?
