Rear Diff Problem

Hi all, I went to change the rear diff fluid today and I found what looks to be part of a thrust washer stuck to the magnetic plug. I then pulled the cover and found another piece in the bottom. Now this looks to be a thrust washer from behind a spider gear so I pulled the whole diff assembly out. I haven't took the assembly apart yet because it is a limited slip unit and I haven't ever worked on one before. I did look everywhere and I couldn't see where it has come from and everything is good and tight. Any suggestions as to what I need to do? Can I pull the assembly apart or do I leave that to a professional? Also, where can I get the replacement parts? Are these dealer items only?

Thanks
Scott

It is a straight take-apart operation. If it is a Ford differential, then you will probably get the parts at the dealer. If it is a Dana the parts are available almost everywhere. I have never seen a thrust washer from the spider gears come out before.

I haven't ever seen one either but that is exactly what it looks like. Oh yeah, it is a Dana 80 dually axle so hopefully it will be easy to find and not have to order. Where else could the piece have come from? I will try and get some pics and post them so that maybe the exerts can identify it.

Thanks

Ok, I got the diff apart and it was definately a thrust washer. After inspection I have determined that I need all new spider gears and the cross shaft that the gears ride on. Remember this is a limited slip diff so the cross shaft is just that, shaped like a cross and all 4 gears ride on a shaft. I will get pics and post them as soon as I can. Anyway, what I am after is where is the best and quickest place to get the parts as I am down until I get this fixed.

Thanks

The local service writer said that the rear axle fell under the 3 year 36,000 mile warranty. I have 77k on the old girl so I ordered the new spider kit yesterday at $400. If I find out that the rear axle falls under the 100k warranty I am going to be extremely upset, which will be minor as to how the service writer will feel.
