My truck is making a rattling noise... Yes I know it's a diesel. It seems to be getting louder now that cold weather has hit in CA. OK not COLD but cold for here.
It goes away under heavy acceleration and very light throttle. Any Ideas?? Thanks for the help in advance. Mike :dunno

Try taking the flywheel inspection plate off to see if it gets louder . It may be the torque converter.

Mine is noisy too

mine is loud too. i went by and let my buddy listen to it and he thinks it is the converter. mine is loud at idle and once the converter locks up it goes away but it comes back if you let it coast to a stop when itshifts back to second gear it starts again. Any Ideas?

ok, this is for all 3 of you:

-is the rattle only when you are rolling, and how fast?
-does it rattle only when cold?
-where on the vehicle does it sound slike its coming from? front/middle/back ?

To continues Zookies line of questions.. Does it sound like bearings in a coffee can ? 99s are known to have torque converter issues, mine was one of them and I replaced it. Normally it isn't noticeable while driving but is very noticeable at idle.

Do you have aftermarket exhaust? Mine will occasionaly rattle in same situations.

X2.

Look for shiny spots on yer exhaust system.. especially around where the down-pipe sweeps toward the rear, near the heat shield.

(as the engine torques up, during shifts and at certain loading.. the Exhaust can/will make Buzz/Rattle sounds as it touches (briefly) the shroud/heat shields. There is also a Pinch weld where the firewall meets the cab floor pan that needs looking at too.

The Fix is an ever so slight tweak, using an Audio/Vibration attenuation device. (Pry Bar ;))

and I'll add
flip the belt off (with the engine NOT running)
start the engine and see if it's gone

When my 99 makes noises like this I run the piss out of it and shift hard for a day or 2, then it stops. After a couple days it comes back, then repeat, and repeat again. After a month - the starter wont engage the flexplate because its warped, replace broken in center flexplate.. and in my case - repeat everything including flexplate 4 times.
