questions on transmission work

have a 2005 f250 4wd auto trans 6.0 L diesel. have about 60000 miles on it. Is the transmission har to replace and how do I know if I have a internal or external filter. Is it good enough, just to drop the trans pan and drain the fluid in the pan.

I use to own a 08 6.4. First time, I hated driving a ford. Traded it back in for a nice 05. Happy ever since.
