When I drove to work today and shut down I noticed my pyro still read somewhere around 150 but figured it must be residual heat registering and would go back to zero in time. Two hours later it still reads 100 (after flickering as I turned the key but didnt start, just to see what happened).

Why would the gauge not go back to zero? It is the Autometer Phantom.

Mine doesn't zero.

It can't be reading ambient temp unless the power supply is not keyed. It needs power to read the probe from my understanding. I guess it goes back to what ever it wants to.:dunno Mines usually at 150.

most pyros are not needing of external power to work, they rely on the two dissimiliar metals to in the probe to create a signal that reads on your guage.

however that being said there might be a some out there that wont let the gauge needle move without power applied? :dunno

mine reads ambiet temps , usually it hangs near 50 but a few times this winter when i didnt plug ol girl in it read pegged 0

everything you want to know about thermocouples

I was curious because I just hooked hte power last night. Before connecting the needle was below the zero mark but as soon as I plugged in the power wire it pegged right on zero and was there this morning when I got in. It was in the 50s or so and that might be enough below 100 to draw the needle down. So, it apparently can do something without the ignition on.

No worries, just wondering if it should go back to zero at shutoff but suspect it might at night.

My Pyro and tranny are wired to the same constant hot and read ambient temps, and /or the cooling cycle after the engine has been shut down. I don't really recall why I wired them that way, but I like it.

Robert Autometer's pyros do use an external powersource;)

Mine doesn't have the box I think Isspros have. The probe has 2 wires that go straight to the gauge and power and ground, then power and ground for illumination. I can kill it at 350 and it goes to 150, turn key on and it goes above 300.:dunno

yep i was just reading their stuff.
thats a weird set up.
i have seen it like that on alot of aircraft instrument pods that monitor tons of info, but its usually the user interface that needs the juice, vice the thermo itself, sort of takes awya your direct reading.
learn something new every day. :sorry :thumbs

You know that's a constant drain on the batts, have you had short life on your batts before the Optimas?
