I purchased a 1942 Ford GPW around 1990. It had a few modifications to it back then but we started having kids in 1992 so it got put on the back burner. It has been sitting in Oregon since I moved up here in 1994. My step-dad hauled it up here for me in 2004 and I have finally got started on it.

Current mods from 1990 are Chevy II 153ci 4 cylinder, Cadillac tilt wheel, Power steering, Disk brakes and minor body modifications.

This time I am redoing some old stuff and installing some new. Need new power steering box and pump(old junkyard parts are junk), new carb, fuel pump, seats(have some located out of a escort), new diff carriers(old ones are broke which is why I parked it in 1993), top, tires/wheels, spring over conversion and a nice paint job.

First pic is of what it looked like when it arrived in Alaska a few years ago. Wish I could find some pics of it in Oregon. I use to use it to drag pastures and feed cows so I know there are some pics somewhere??

Rest of the pictures are of the current progress over the last couple of weeks. Spring over is done other than drivelines, steering drop and brake lines. Looks good with 35" rubber on 16" rockcrusher wheels, old ones were 30" on 15" white spoke. The 16" wheels clear the disk brake calipers much better.

Two of my three boys are helping me out - Family project :sweet

I'm thinking you are gonna need more than one can of WD40! :sly

That looks like a fun project, and will be even more fun to knock around in when it is finished!

You have found out what I knew, years ago, that the stock stuff is not up to anything but the stock motor. I put in a Buick V6 and Turbo 400 automatic tranny and both differentials. I went with disc brakes in the front and 11 inch in the rears. That and a ton of other stuff, that I have forgotten. I started the project in the 1970's and sold it in 1982. I have pictures, but they are part of a bigger picture that is glued and framed. I don't have and single pictures or I would send them to you. I also suffer from CRS.

Mine is not stock motor but it is very low horsepower - 90hp as where the stock engine was 60hp. I am repairing the stock differential housings and putting in new Omix-Ada axles and hope that 18 years of wisdom has taught me how to have a bit more throttle control and not destroy them again. In another 20 years I may do a factory type restoration so I done want to totally hack it up. Right now I am building it into a economy minded commuter vehicle for the summer. I use to drive the 95' Explorer to work but with kids getting there licenses that is no longer available. If I was going hard core 4 wheelin I would have to upgrade the drivetrain but the only 4 wheelin up here available to us is done on our ATV's, all the off road trails have a weight limit :( Should make a good work rig though.

What does the GPW stand for Crumm?

The Willys MB US Army Jeep, along with the nearly identical Ford GPW, was manufactured from 1941 to 1945. They are the iconic World War II Jeep. The Fords went into production as "GP", with "G" for a "Government" type contract and "P" commonly used by Ford to designate any passenger car with a wheelbase of 80 inches. October 1941, it became apparent Willys-Overland could not keep up with production demand and Ford was contracted to produce them as well. The Ford car was then designated GPW, with the "W" referring to the "Willys" licensed design.

Looks good Kevin !!!

For comparison this is the 47' Willys that we use hunting..........it is repowered with a Buick motor and has foam filled bar tires.
