Cooling is a big issue with these tranny's. Get a temp guage on it and monitor it. If its getting hot (240+) get a larger cooler. Shift kits help these auto trannys out as well. There are several different options for shift kits. If you are really throwing alot of HP and heavy loads at the tranny then more serious modifications need to be done. Let us know what your current use and future plans are and we can point yoou in the right direction.

torque converters are weak... change it out!

I will second that

but if your running the engine in stock form with the 430 gear sets you might tons o miles out of her

however with a dump bed i would imagine its seen some HEAVY loads,
you could always pull a sample of the tranny fluid for analysis.
and an oasis report just to see whats been done to her

40K miles she is still pretty new :sweet

overdrive button problem

I have an '02 f-250 7.3 I just bought a couple weeks ago. Noticed when I push the od button to shift out of overdrive, button does nothing. Doesn't light up and doesn't downshift. Was emailed by dragr8cer and he said had same prob. but he counteracted that by starting out in first and pushing button and worked. I went out and fired it up and tried to shift down to first, but couldn't get the selector down past drive(od). I tried pretty hard but didn't really reaf on it. At least I found out that I can't downshift. Which I hadn't tried before. Feels like the gear selector is up against a stop. Anyone have ideas.
Thanx, Dick

yurs is classic
look at the steering colum cover wher it ges into the instrument panel. there you will see the shifter arm going into a rubber booty, peel it back LOOK at the two wires coming out of the shifter handle IS it cut in two? it should have been a recall but it wasnt
teh wires get rubbed through by teh hard rubber peice when the tilt wheel is pulled all teh way down to be comfortable whilst driving.
bad thing is the whole ahndle gets replaced you cant buy just the switch and wires.
or you can poeel back all the shrink wrap on teh hanlde up to the base of teh button assembly and pull teh wires out of the handle and splice em back together and run
the wires on the outside of the handle

I'll look into

Robert, thanks for the info. I'll check into that. Have to have surgery for an anerysm day after tomorrow, so it'll have to wait awhile. Will my wife be okay
driving it for a few weeks? No trouble driving, runs great and shifts great, just won't go into low 1 or low 2. Need your opinion on that, she won't be towing or anythnig, just normal driving.
Thanx, Dick
