I can't believe how fast the price of ammo has been climbing.

I got my .40 cal S&W PT-101 Taurus last April or so. One of my reasons for deciding on .40 cal was, that for a semi-auto pistol in a center fire round with decent stopping power, it seemed to be more available and affordable.

The best buy around for .40 cal, was at Walmart. Back then I could get a 50 rnd box of Blazer Brass for $9. Now that same box is $13. That's almost a 50% increase in less than a year!!

So I've been looking for better deals on-line and just picked up 1000 rnds of Wolf for less than what Walmart wants for the Blazer Brass. Some folks like Wolf, some don't. Last weekend at my concealed carry class, one guy was using .40 Wolf without any problems. In fact, the only rounds that anybody had issues with were .22 Remington. Seems rimfire rounds sometimes don't like to work in the cold.

Load your own ammo. I got a press and some scales and a few other widgets (like a primer press) and I load my 9mm totally. I have never bought ammo for my Glock.

I'd bet it's the Copper & Brass price TG.

I bought 8 feet of 0 gauge wire and 4 Copper lugs about 2 weeks ago. Cost me Dam near $50.00

And that was from a place I do allot of business with. the guy said he gave me my normal break on it too..

The fact that the Dirtballz are rip'n it out of the Street Lights, faster than some cities can replace it.. Tells ya 'bout the market price.

I've been thinking about looking into doing that. But I know absolutely nothing about it. And then there is the intial investment of equipment.

Any good books or websites on the subject?

Kent, buy a Lyman loading manual at a local toy store and read it first.

IIRC, you shouldn't be using handloads in defensive work, but you can put together a decent practice load for pretty cheap..

FWIW, call me or drop me a PM and I can help ya out. I've been handloading my own stuff for nearly 20 years.

As far as the price of ammo goes, your drastic increase is the cost of lead. A bag of #8 shot for my skeet loads used to cost $8.00, now it's well over $20.

I have found walmart to be the cheapest anywhere on .40s&w. I buy the winchester 165grain target which here is $21 a box. I am not a fan of Blazer or Wolf. The times I have shot them i have noticed they are more dirty than rem or win and I have seen more jams with wolf. but thats just what i have seen might not always be like that.
Once i noticed the price jump i started to buy a box or 2 a week so when it gets .30 or more a round i will will quit buying and start reloading. I have enough brass now to do 1000 rounds but right now i would only save about 3-5 cents a bullet and right now its not worth it to me.
