Hey all,
I'm looking obviously to do some upgrades to my stock truck... I'm thinking of going with either the preditor or the SCT flash tuner. I'm interested in these because of the code reading feature they both have built in. Anyone on here using one of these? I was wondering what kind of mileage increase you saw on the economy tune... Also other experiences you may have with them good/bad that you would like to share.

Thanks!
Jason

I would go with the SCT, a few vendors can install custom tunes onto it. DP tuner is one, With the predator, you get what they give you, not that its bad. Might give Jody a call!

I love the chip, switch on the fly! You could find a used superchip or similar programmer cheap for the code reading. Thats what I did...

I was talking about the flash hand held tuner... You can switch tunes on the fly with that?

I would recommend against buying the predator programmer. I bought it over a year ago for $400. Six months later I wound up buying one of Tony Wildman's 4 position chips (www.totaldieselperformance.com). The predator programmer does not even compare to Tony Wildman's custom tunes. I'm not just talking about the higher HP settings, Tony's tow programs were better also.

1) When you put the two side by side they each cost the same (4 pos chip from either Jody or Tony vs predator).
2) You can change the chip setting while driving. With the predator you have to pull over, plug it in, turn the key on & off as it loads. 3-4 minutes of time. Doesn't seem like alot of time but after you do it 50 times it gets old.
3) The predator increases the line pressure in your tranny. This is no good in the long run. You can read many posts where people started having tranny issues with tuners, that have not upgraded their valve body. At least with the predator you can go into the advanced settings and put the tranny settings back to stock. Whatever chip/tuner you choose I would recommend upgrading your valve body before adding any chip/programmer.
4) You can get a custom chip with your specific needs & setup. Not a one size fits all setup.
5) you can buy a code reader for under $100 (instead of being like me and have a $400 code reader:doh: )
6) I do not know anyone who has had both that would recommend the tuner over the chip.

P.S. Make sure you get guages first if you haven't already. Check out Dieselmanor.com. There kits come with everything you need for the do-it-yourselfer. The instructions are simple & come with color photos. Shouldn't take more than 5 hours with a beer break.

Hope this info helps & doesn't make it more confusing! Just trying to save you from spending too much $

Just noticed you were in the St. Louis area. I would recommend contacting SLAPS (Saint Louis Area Power Stokes)

http://www.stlouisareapowerstrokes.com/

Great bunch of Folks, just met a few this weekend (they came to get some of Tony's updated tunes.... hint...hint...:burnit ). They will take care of you and probably save you some $.

Best regards,

WB

You can not change programs on the fly with a programer, but as said with a chip you can. But SCT can have Jodys files loaded on to it, rather then the stock SCT files.

You would like a chip better then a tuner I garotee:D it. As far as gauges, Dennis at ITP, and Jeremy at LIPD have both treated me good!
