I have 2001 F-250, SCMT on low setting, Tymar intake, 113,000 miles, and a fresh and clean fuel filter changed last month.

I'm having trouble with the new ULSD fuel. I use Diesel Kleen during most fill ups. My starts in the morning are VERY hard with #8 and #6 cylinders not firing until I build temperature (about 3-5 min). I have 2 tanks in my truck, the factory tank and a 40 gl in the bed. My tank set up is different than most, I have a switch on the dash and switch from main the aux with what I assume is a pump and gauge in each tank. I have ULSD in the factory tank and some B20 in the aux tank. I think I got a bad tank of ULSD (from the Diamond Shamrock at 360 & Ave K) and during the snow last week had terrible mornings. I had about 1/4 tank of B20 in the aux tank and my truck started fine and ran better. Yesterday I needed fuel and bought some ULSD, at a different station, and added about 8oz of Diesel Kleen and I'm having problems again. The only reason I used $20.00 of ULSD is because there are no B20 station near me (360 & Mid-Cites) and I'm going to Midlothian tomorrow and filling up at the Love's with B20. I don't know if I'm the only one with problems with ULSD?

I REALLY can't afford an injector replacement. What else could be going on? I know good fuel is important, but is this ULSD that much different? Thanks for the help guys.

If your engine has to warm up that long before those cylinders begin to fire, I'd suspect the UVC connectors. Before I did my my injectors, my truck would start rough when cold. When I did the injectors, I replaced the glow plugs also. I checked the old ones afterwards and found 3 of 8 to be bad. Even with three bad glow plugs, the engine would smooth out on a cold start within 20 to 30 seconds.

If the UVC connector is partially undone, that could possibly be indicated by symptoms like you have described. Especially with the adjacent cylinders you've described. The UVC connectors coming loose for a while now has been identified as a problem area, to the point Ford came out with a clip to fix the problem.

You can test glow plugs without pulling the valve covers. Disconnect the wire harness at the valve cover and OHM test the 4 wire to the glow plugs. An open reading or short will indicate a bad glow plug or loose wire.
