I was looking on dieselsite and saw they sell what is called a "Custom Ported 7.3L Garrett Ballbearing Turbo Housing" It says they machine the housing to allow compressor surge relief. I was just wondering if there was a way this could be done at home. I have all the equipment to do the machining myself. I just need to know exactly what they remove when they machine or "port" the housing.

you could if you new the spec's..but the ball bearing housing will not work on the stock turbo..they use the ATS housing on a stocker that does the same thing..

x2 for the ATS, it made all the difference in my truck. I pull heavy and fast (I know
not the safest), but I am not the most patient person around.. I could only go 65mph
before it would surge...

You could do it with the right tooks, but it looks cast with the ports and just cleaned
up. Mine took some additional cleaning by me to remove any burs and smooth it
some.
