PVC is common though I'm stubborn and have lots of patients (most of the time) so I've done stuff with copper even additional spigots on the house.

For PEX I was looking to do some mods to my grandomother's house which is run w/ pex, the cost of the flaring tool was a bit too much for me to justify for the small project so we had to creatively engineer the plumbing modifications on her house.

I must be a master plumber, look at the Avatar <--- I have the britches.

I seem to recall in pvc there is a hot water kind that is light tan colored as to where the cold is white. Thats about all I can remember..
