I think that on the seat belt subject that it is a perosn's choice of wearing it or not. I wear mine all the time and would love for everybody else to wear it, but when auto companies have to put restrictions on vehicles because of seat belts something is wrong.

Perhaps on your thought of not being able to start the vehicle, there can be pressure point sensors in the seat that if activated the vehicle's speed is governed to 25 mph if a seat belt is not buckled. I will at times get in a truck and move it around and would hate to put the seatbelt on every time.

too much government involvement for me...stupid is as stupid does...
forcing people to do whats RIGHT isnt the reponsible road to parenting !

the same folks that dont buckle 'em up are smoking in the cars w/ 'em...
now california's gonna make that a LAW too...wheres it end !?!

you cant FORCE people to parent & be responsible !

I once followed an Explorer missing the rear glass. There were at least 3 kids in the back playing/tossing suff out the back. I called 911 and followed it until the patrol car was behind me, I then passed them gave the driver a friendly wave and watched her get pulled over in the rear view mirror. I not big on calling the cops for every little thing but this was over the edge for me. I had a cousin in the hospital for 3 months because he didn't buckle up. My kids (2 and 4) know that everyone needs to be buckled up. Grandpa tried to not wear his seatbelt once: He was quickly corrected by his 2 year old grand daughter.

I've been in the FD since '93 and seen lots of "signal 7" with adults as well as kids...kids always hit you harder. I know it sucks but we can only do so much to get the point across. Our trucks never move til the car seat is buckled and secure....that aint happening to us.

For several years we had our daughter convinced the car would not start without the seatbelts buckled. I hope I can con my boy when he is older the same way.

That's an idea that probably would work. If there can be a sensor to prevent an intoxicated person from driving, there should also be a sensor regarding seat belts.

why not just EDUCATE our kids, drivers ed is for CRAP anymore...look
how many folks dont yield or dont know that the left lane is for
PASSING ....then we let PEOPLE make their OWN choice, theyll be
responsible and held accountable for their own actions.

just look how many on THIS forum have choosen to disable the
belt minder/chime ? even taken steps to clip the belt and
then SIT ON IT...

the REMINDERS are already there...why isnt that enough ?

I disabled my belt-minder and key in ignition chime simply because I spend alot of time hooking up and disconnecting trailers, moving hay around the property, etc. Once I'm out of the driveway or off the property I wear my belts. So does anyone else in my truck.

Number 1 reason- Americans are stupid and lazy. Putting on your seat belt takes some energy so people don't put it on. Stupid huh. :dunno

If you want to reduce the amount of lives being lost to not wearing a seatbelt there has to be an intervention by someone whether it be the gov, or manufacturers.

A few people that work for me refuse to wear their seat belt because they say that they were in accidents that had they been wearing seat belt they would be dead. I don't know how much of this is true or stupidity speaking.
