No 5-40 is not too thin in warm temperatures. You need to do some research on oil and you will find the second number is the hot viscosity while the first is the cold viscosity. bobistheoilguy is a good site to check this out.

Thanks for the education. The deep scan scheduled for June 12 but should know more about the fuel pressure and maybe the fuel tank contents this weekend. I plan to also change the oil and see what that does.

I really appreciate you sharing your experience and knowledge with me.

An update. Checked the fuel pressure today and all appears to be fine. This rig has the blue spring upgrade and it held a solid 65 PSI regardless if idling or climbing a hill. Is this normal PSI with that spring? It was about 70 degrees and I really stretched its legs/lungs and it began running a lot better. It did throw me 2 codes to work with, P0263 and P0401.

When returning the fuel pressure loaner, ran into an acquaintance and he told me to try the Hot Shot Stiction Eliminator. I cleared the codes, added 32 oz of the Eliminator, and took it for a 60 mile test drive. IT RAN beautiful, like normal and only have the P0401 code to deal with (which is caused from my block off plate).

This is a summary of what I did: replace the lift fuel pump, changed fuel filters, added some fuel conditioner, changed oil with Rotella T6 5-40 with a new OF, and 32 oz of HS Stiction Eliminator.

Do you think my original engine troubles were fuel injector stiction problems? I am curious of your experience and thoughts?

Thanks,
Ken

How long did you have fuel pressure gauge on it? You really should have a permanent one to see what the pressure is when it acts up and also to warn you of possible, imminent, catastrophic injector failure due to low fuel pressure. Blue spring mod is one of the first things done on all 6.0's I have and had, even the one with the plugged p/u assembly had it and still presented same issues. 65 psi is very good, it will fluctuate from 50-65 while driving depending on load given and it will eventually settle around 60 since the spring is new. Not 100% on stiction being the cause, I still recommend pulling the pickup assembly since it has never been done.

5k on injectors and already having stiction doesn't seem likely, I seriously think you have a fuel supply issue. Since you already changed the HFCM, injectors, filters there's only a few things left, that pickup assembly being 1, HPOP system the other.

"The lower Racor filter, when looking to the inside had brown lines creeping up the filter ribs" That brown stuff came from the pickup assembly. It's the only metal in the fuel tank and even though it is stainless it still corrodes.
"And something else to add, this rig sat most of the winter and wonder if that created a settlement issue" How much fuel was in it when sitting? Anything under 3/4 tank and that pickup assembly is exposed and gets oxidation worse then it already had. Go back to my post with the picture and look at the "brown" stuff on the assembly.

Thanks for the emphasis, point taken and received. I totally forgot about the filter lines and what may have caused them. Also, tank issues are not common in this area but I will get into the fuel tank in the near future. I realize the HPOP is probably the next major issue to happen and was warned today about how the connecting tube has a tendency to back out of the pump, blowing the o-ring and dying on the spot; or something like that.

I will monitor this forum and report back as I learn more - please let me know any ideas or opinions others may have about my 03. It has been a great rig and I do not abuse it and hope to keep it going as I cannot afford a new one.

Great to hear from all of you,
Ken

As a follow up - I replaced all 8 of fuel injectors (3rd set) at 93k miles. Being the previous ones from Diesel Care and Performance were under warranty, worked something out with them and received replacements (again from them). They kept saying I installed them incorrectly but I was persistent with them with their warranty.

When in there, discovered 5 were burnt and 1 of those was really coked up. Injectors from Cylinders 1, 3, 5, 7, and 2 were blackened to the first oil ring and #7 was missing the copper crush ring and took a while to clean up. Another interesting thing, did a bubble test on injector set #2 and it passed fine. There were intermittent issues with error codes from 1, 3 which were P0263, P0269. Cylinders 1 and 7 hold down clamps were only torqued down to about 20 ft lbs or were looser than what I like, the rest were at about 25 ft lbs. The new set are now at 30 ft lbs.

While in there, pulled the IPR and checked the screen - was good but put a new one in. Changed the oil with Rotella T6, 5-40 full synthetic. Cranked up in about 10 seconds and ran OK. Took it for a test drive and went well. There appears to be a slight miss when idling and will check things out after it goes for more of a drive and pull my mules to the mountain for the annual ritual to bring home the wild meat.

Next week, the box comes off and will check the fuel tank for corrosion.

What do you say about what was causing the injectors to burn up?

Thanks
