I see a lot of stuff on newer 7.3's but what's everybody think about for entry level mods for intake, exhaust, and programmer. Not looking to race truck just looking for fuel mileage increase and a little extra towing power any response greatly appreciated

Welcome to SDD!!

I am not sure of the differences between the older and newer 7.3 engines. Someone with more knowledge should chime in later.

My experience is that the mileage gain, 1 to 1.5 mpg with my mods, is lost to the fun factor of driving the truck with its new abilities.

thanks for the welcome. the major difference is that the early 94-97 I believe is that they do not have an intercooler, so I have noticed alot of things aren't available and some that are are not able to provide as much of power gains.

The main differences between our older 7.3 and the newer one is that the turbos have wastegates, and that they aren't intercooled, as fgtex mentioned. Also, if I'm correct, I believe that the newer 7.3s are common rail injection, where as we have Direct Injection. I know for sure that the older 7.3s are direct in jected, but not sure about the newer ones. Oh, and :welcome to SDD.com

I see alot of you guys don't believe in off the shelf programmers such as a Superchip or edge. What are the main reasons for getting a custom tuned one. I would understand if your main purpose is to get maximum power, but would I be that much better off getting a custom one just for wanting a little more power and a few more mgp out of my truck:dunno I pull a 28 ft. enclosed race car trailer in the summer and drive it to and from work when not car pooling w/my dad.

an off the shelf tuner is a waste of money.get a chip from tony wildman or Beans Diesel Performance .you can get 1-6 program chips from him.the max performance increase you are gonna get is an extra 75HP no matter what anybody tells you.if you want more you will need to upgrade injectors.have the chip burnt for TDE1 pcm code.yours should be tee4or 5 i believe.just tell them you have TDE1 when they ask for your PCM code.TDE1 has better shift points for the tranny if yours is auto.only uses the glowplugs when they are needed instead of everytime you start the truck, save wear and tear on the glow plug system.

the motors themselves are mostly the same between the 94-97 and the Superduty years. I believe the 94-97 have single-shot injectors, whereas the newer ones have split-shot, for a quieter effect. Turbos are wastegated on all years of the 7.3, but i believe the newer ones have a bigger turbo. Newer ones are intercooled, and probably have different programming. They are both direct injection using a hydraulic system. A downside the the newer motors in the super duties is the powdered metal rods that replaced the forged steel rods in i believe 2001. They are weaker, crappier, and prone to breaking if you put any serious power to them, but you'll be allright with your 94, as it will have the steel rods.
