It's disgusts me that our government releases reports like this during the weekend, or on holidays when they think people aren't looking. I would encourage you to contact your congressman and give him your opinion on this~

This was reported by the AP...
Motorists' Habits Spur Call For Tax Increases
"A 50 percent increase in gasoline and diesel fuel taxes is being urged by the commission to finance highway construction and repair until the government devises another way for motorists to pay for using public roads. ....increasing the current 18.4 cents a gallon federal tax on gasoline and the 24.4 cents a gallon tax on diesel."

This does not affect your state fuel tax which is also subject to increase.

Its not as bad as the livestock tax they are trying to get through. Its actually on the books as a flatulence tax. Apparently dairy farmers will have to pay a tax on cows because the methane they produce is damaging the ozone layer. And no, I'm not joking or half way into a bottle of Jack.

I've heard of this too and it's crazy, to say the least.

I agree that it's a silly idea, but disagree that it's "not as bad". With the drop of a gavel your diesel ppg will go up 13cents immediately. That's an additional $4 per tank. Multiply that by # of tanks in the US? BILLIONS of our $$$ going to an institution (federal government) that has been WASTING our tax $$$ for decades...

Instead of taking more of our money, they need to be fixing how they do business.

Admittedly it's rediculous, but a tax on COW-FARTS doesn't compare, and I'm pretty pissed about it. :rant

Both of these make me want to start on a bottle of Jack.

Welcome to the new order. Increased spending has to be funded somewhere. When the leader said that $5/gal fuel is good but it happened too quick you should have seen it coming.

If they jack the price of road fuel then you are increasing the incentive to run off road in your road trucks.

As for the fart-tax the EPA has issued its official ruling and decided that the emissions from livestock are not regulated under the clean air act.

Said it here before and it was unpopular, but we're headed for $5.00+ per gallon at the our pumps for fuel. It'll take awhile but "They" will get us there IF they can.

The only thing we have going for ourselves is to let our, so called, Leaders know how we feel.. En Mass.

And.. I'm think'n we need to let the "New Guy" get in there and see if he can do what he sez he's guna do. If he's HALF as successful as he >SAID< he wants to be.... There's a Glimmer of hope that the Pencil Necked Geeks (EPA) Fat Cats (DC Crowd) won't be able to simply Drop the Gavel.

Just some thoughts..:dunno

I'm just not sure I understand why getting to $5 per/gal would be such an objective that they would raise taxes to get it there. Also, taxes and commodities valuation are two different animals.

The whole point of the AP article ("Motorists' Habits Spur Call For Tax Increases") was that the feds realized that 2008's price spike caused people to quit driving, so they bought less fuel, which made tax revenues fall. Why would they want to replicate that?

You may be right, but I'm just not tracking with the logic. If what you are saying is true, then you'll want to buy some Exxon stock today! Garranteed gains, right? Probably a discussion for a commodities thread...

It's not raising taxes to Get to $5.00+... It's.. Raise the taxes Before it gets there.. so the increased taxes will offset the HIT the Fed, State and Local governments took last summer..... when we slow down on our driving habits again.

:dunno just my think'n on it Ken.
