that stinks. is there any way to stop a slow leak without changing the gasket? cause i would rather deal with the leak than pull the motor.

where are you seeing signs of the leak?

are you sure its the pan that is leaking? look at therecent threads on using CAT florescent dye to pinpoint the leak. wash the motor and find the leak?

is your valley dry? are you sure its not fuel?trans pan gasket tight?

The 7.3 I worked on didn't have a pan gasket. Napa said their isn't one available either. I had to buy the stong grey gasket maker to re-seal the pan. I also had a leak where the dipstick goes into the pan. There is an o-ring there that was out of place. She is leak free now, but all this involved pulling the motor.

Yep, its coming out to replace gasket. If the pan shows ANY sign of rust replace it. The leak will only get worse. This is so common that its something to look for when buying a used 7.3 :sorry

Im in the same boat, I just discarded all of the "COMMON" oil leak causes. and Im going to live with the little oil leak, because I dont want to pull the motor :rant

Just thinking out-loud but won't the pan come down enough to reseal? I know you have to pull the engine to get the pan off but won't it drop down a inch or two? I have never removed the pan so I am just asking.

banana- get a second opinion on the pan leak. 94-97 PSD's had a TSB on the from cylinder head passage end plugs. The design was bad and they leaked. its a 50 cent oring fix.

the SEALANT for the pan is aenerobic (?sp) and iirc with the motor upside down, the procedure is to clean the mating surfaces, apply sealant and let cure for 24 hours. i kid you not!

does it leak when the engine is running or well after shutdown. if it leaks while its running, look at the O-ring sealing the steel high-pressure lines coming off the pump at each end.

<shamelssly stolen form another page>
Remember, the Powerstroke uses a separate high-pressure oil pump to operate the injectors. This oil pump has steel oil lines leading from the pump to each head, and an oil return line from each head back to the pump. International designed the block casting with a drain hole in the right side rear of the valley -- and this drain hole empties into a cast runnel (channel), which leads to another casting hole located (you guessed it) just above the right corner of the oil pan. With the engine running, the windage from the flywheel made the oil look just like it was squirting straight out of the corner of the oil pan. <end theivery>

bottom line is, make doubly sure that the pan is leaking. if it is, then so be it. if its not, you are gonna save a bunch of dough and lost sleep if its not.
