The indicator needle has slipped/gotten out of adjustment. When in Park it points about to R. When in D it points to 3. Is there a way to adjust the indicator needle, or has something likely broken? I'm not even sure where to begin to look.

Mine has been like that since I got it. I have learned to live with it just like living with the lie-o-meter on the miles to empty.

Mine is a little off also. I just know by feel now. Hey smoky how many miles do you show when out of gas? I will run completely out at 100 miles til empty!

I believe it is operated by a small diameter cable under the dash. You can adjust it.

Here it is shown attached to the instrument cluster in the foreground on my 99.5.
