On a rig I use to have I used a heavy metal coat hanger wire doubled over with a rag hooked to the end and engine degreaser(aerosol can). Just bend the hanger to reach the upper corners. After you get it all cleaned out be sure to rinse it out real good to get rid of all the degreaser, I don't know how well it would mix with anti-freeze.Cherokee said:Here is a question...where there was diesel in the overflow tank, we have tried to get it off the sides, but with no luck....anyone have any ideas on how to get that thing squeaky clean without replacing it?
Since you've used Dawn on it, can I assume that you've removed the overflow tank from the truck? I had a similar problem but not with diesel. I had oil in the overflow tank . I solved my problem with 2" X 3" pieces of an "oil only" rag (generously donated by Crumm... ) floating in the coolant. After I shut off the truck I would remove the radiator cap, shake the truck sideways (to mix the oil in with the coolant) then float a piece of it (tied to a string) on the coolant. I the morning I would disgard the used oil only. After a few days of changing the 2" X 3" I finally got all the oil out. BTW, the oil did like to stick to the sides of the tank. Since diesel is a petroleum product too, these oil only rags should work for you too. Your challange will be to get it off the walls and floating in the coolant. Good Luck!Cherokee said:Here is a question...where there was diesel in the overflow tank, we have tried to get it off the sides, but with no luck....anyone have any ideas on how to get that thing squeaky clean without replacing it? You just cant get inside of it and I have tried hot water and Dawn dish detergent. Got all the loose stuff out but cant get it off the sides, so the top 1/2 of the tank is black on the sides.
