Now the turbo...

The late 99's and newer had a bigger turbo, but is does surge. Surge is the noise you may not hear yet when around 10-15# boost and doggin the truck a little. It is not good for the turbo, very hard on it.

There are several differant fixes for this.
1. A wicked wheel- this is simply a compresser wheel out of the early 99 trucks. It is a drop in replacement and runs about $70-$100. It will HELP surge, some trucks it will stop it some help it. It is louder then the stock wheel, some like this some dont. (BTW... I loved it!!!)
2. A ATS compresser housing- this is a replacement housing for the compresser side of your turbo, again drop in, had a ported housing and a 4" intake (stock is 3"). About $350-$400 Also louder then stock, some like, some dont (again I LOVED IT!!!)
3. A new turbo- several out there but if your going to stay with the stock injectors this is the one you want, a GTP-38r. About $1200-$1500. Drop in, it is a ballbearing turbo, spools qiucker and will lower your EGT's about 100-150

Pic's... first one you can see the CAC tubes with the dieselsite boots, and the CCV (crank case vapor) delete tube by the intake. Second one you can see the ATS housing (kinda) ((BEST SHOT I HAVE))

I have now installed a GTP-38r BB turbo but I dont have any installed shots of it...

Ok.. I have the morning off tomorrow, first thing I'm gonna do is run to NAPA for the stuff to do the El-Cheapo filter mod... then I'm gonna pull the boots and wash them...

I'll let you guys know what happens...

Personally, I would suggest you buy the Banks Stinger kit. You get the 4" stainless steel exhaust & down pipe, and you get the six gun programmer. Be sure and spend the extra $60 and buy the speedloader. It gives you an extra 20 HP but more importantly it gives you a pyro and it will automatically de-fuel your engine if the EGT's get too high. And as everyone has suggested get gauges, minimum is the EGT gauge but a boost gauge is nice too. Unless your turbo is defective (doubtful) there is no reason to replace it.

There are many other brands of performance products out there that work well, but you end up mix & matching various products together. I've had 3 other PSD's before this one, put the Banks kits on each of them and never had a problem. Everything is matched from Banks and designed to work together as a system. Quality is top notch and customer service/support has always been good for me. Plus, maybe I'm lucky, but I've never had an issue from the Ford dealer about getting warranty work done even with the Banks system in place. With the new Banks systems you can turn a dial to set your desired power level, you can run it at the stock setting or dial it up to level 6. I never run mine higher than level 3 when towing and have enough power to pull the 8K trailer up long, steep inclines in the Rocky Mtn's at 75 MPH. You can also get the Banks turbo brake for your truck. It's only a couple hundred bucks and works fantastic when going downhill with a big load hooked on. I wish they had them for the new 6.0's........

As far as economy: On my 05 PSD, I just pulled an 8K trailer from New Hampshire to Denver and got 13.9 MPG. Coming back without the trailer, cruise control on at 75 MPH, I got 21.6 MPG

I've put over 200K miles on each of my previous PSD's after installing the Banks kits and the reliability, performance and fuel economy has been great. You can easily install the full system yourself in less than a day. If you're towing really heavy loads, consider the Big Hoss system from Banks that gives you the bigger intercooler. It adds about $1600 to the cost. Start off with this system and see how the truck pulls. There are many more things you can add to go faster, but I'll bet you will find this will give you all the towing power you need.

I wouldn't exactly call it el cheapo as it's price is worth every bit of performance it gives:sweet

well, I got the filter mod done, might wash the boots today... I aquired a previous commitment as far as anything else; kid ripped the reverse synchro out of her F150 so I'm fixing that today... plus Dad's been in the hospital, so I've got a pretty full plate... I'll keep you updated...

I did notice the turbo whining a little louder after the filter mod... I drive like an old fart, so I can't tell you much about the performance, does seem to have taken a few miles longer to go through the first quarter-tank of liquid gold... I keep decent mpg records, so we'll see...

gonna look for a boost/pyro/trans temp guage cluster in the next few days..

One other cheap mod to do that no one has mentioned is the prepump and intank mods.

I just did my truck last week and added a carter 4070 fuel pump and I can't believe the difference. I'm pretty sure my quick disco fittings where sucking alot of air because of how much quieter it is now. My girlfriend even made a comment about how much quiter it was. SOTP feel with adding the extra fuel pump seems to have a little more throttle response.

With the tank on the ground do the "harpoon" mod to the vent tube. I couldn't believe how much quicker fueling up is now. I think I got less than 2 gallons and the fuel was all the way up to the hole in the opening.

ok.. got the boots washed, Dad's out of the hospital, got the F150 back together... first couple weeks of fuel economy records show a half-gallon increase... kid took it to Hartford yesterday hauling the 4-horse tagalong, one Clyde, and the show cart (won $15. and a pink ribbon)... pretty good for being the only Clydesdale there...

I brought my scan tool and voltmeter, DC inductive probe, cooling system pressure and block testers home from work yesterday... I hope the glow plug controller may have taken a dump-a-roo... hard starts on humid mornings and white smoke when it does fire... if it was a gas motor, I'd be looking for a coolant getting in the cylinders (hence the cooling system stuff)...
