I thought you were happy with the Rotella 15w40. Me too so far.I guess the main thing is to keep the oil/oil filter changed every 5000 miles. With my truck I do the 6 month or 5000 which ever comes first, usually the 6 month period comes before the 5000 mile mark. I would say on average I have around 4000 miles in a 6 month period. Am I doing this right with the 6 month thing or just wait to get the 5000 mile mark each time?

Thanks

I do *LIKE* the 15/40 rotella...get it at costco (they just downsized
the case from 6gallons to 4gallons though) ! Last time i bought it
it was about 55 bucks for a 6gal case (so i bought 2 cases)

personally if my truck was sitting that much, I'd be doing some
oil sampling...before i changed it @ the 6mo mark...you might be
able to go more than 6mo (if you dont have the 5k miles on it)

Blackstone Laboratories - Diesel Engines

fwiw i ran the dino 15/40 rotella in the winters when we lived in virginia...never had
any problems.

I was in the Costco in my area recently and they have always carried the Rotella 15w40 6 gal case for 57.00

Now I noticed they only carry the 3 gallon case with the newly dsigned handled jug for 27.00

In Maryland, like in Va we can get some cold weather as you know. I have never had an issue with the 15w40 but always wonder should I choose the Rotella 5w40 in the winter. When it gets cold I do plug my truck in I know this helps.

ahhh its 3 gallon cases (thought it was 4)...even worse...cause its
NOT enough now to do an oil change (still gotta buy 6gal to get the
necessary 13.5/14 quarts it takes to "re-fill").

the dealer is probably gonna recommend 5/40 or what ever it is in
cold weather...there was a TSB for this.

Yeah, 3 gallon case, I did a double take on that one. I know the Dodge Cummins/ Chev GMC Duramax owners will be happy they take less oil than we do with their oil changes. I guess at my Costco, I will need two cases which will cost me 54.00

I'll have to find the TSB regarding the 5w40 oil interesting. I do remember when I got my oil changed at the dealer (Ford Truck Shop) the service writer said Ford recommended the MC 10w30 diesel in the 6.0 PDS, because of a TSB. Although mine is a 7.3 he also stated it was good for my 7.3 as well. I guess I didn't mind that grade in the cold months, but they also used the 10w30 MC PSD oil during a summer oil change they said it was OK. I didn't feel comfortable running 10w30 MC PSD oil during the warm months but the truck was under warranty then so I knew I was covered if something happened. I never had a problem, but I just felt better with the 15w40 if that makes sense. I guess if I would have really put my foot down, they would have used the 15w40.

I have always wondered if the Rotella is better than the MC? I know both are good oils. Funny, there is a guy I bump into at Costco now and then and he has a 2000 F350 7.3 and swears by the Delvac 15w40?

Funny thing I always have read where others who use the Rotella 15w40 in their PSD's mention the Rotella has a weird smell other oils don't have. I guess it is true to a degree, the MC 15w40 didn't have that smell. Must be the chemistry of the Rotella. I guess Shell knows what they are doing (LOL) as I have read their R&D with Rotella is second to none according to a PSD owner who stated he worked for Shell at one time.

love it...of COURSE the dealer recommends MC oils....cause they dont
sell anything ELSE ;)

Ford doesnt MAKE oil...they rebrand it and MARK THE PRICE UP...
and the dealer LOVES the profit <probably spiff's the employees
on selling it too>

delvac, rotella, mc, dino or synth. theyre all emotional subjects...on
EVERY forum (you should join a couple motorcycle forums and ask "what
oil is best"....they go NUTS.

same thing w/ filters.

personally if i could run water in the crank case (and it were in "spec")
id do it...im thinking of making a change to some of the tractor supply
brand stuff....its w/in spec and i understand its cheaper.

sorry was drinkin a shiner(s) @ the airport, couldnt see
the web site but NOW i see "turbine" is spinning at more than
6000rpm...makes me wonder if the chemicals in the oil could
all so but "slung" out too.

These have been around awhile from my understanding, so I feel that this issue has been looked into. I don't this that is going to be able to do that much separation anyway.

That thing wouldn't work on our trucks.
You must have air hooked to it to make it work.

You only need air if you are unable to mount it with a direct path to the oil sump if I understand correctly.

I have also read on other Ford Diesel websites where some PSD owners are using the TS diesel oil. I'm not sure who makes it for them? I'm sure it is a decent oil.

Just to touch base on the MC diesel oil, there is a Ford Dealer near me they only do diesel truck repairs on all makes. The place is always busy. They carry the MC, Rotella, Delo, Cat and Valvoline Blue. I guess this covers the many makes they work on for customer choice.

If your looking to save a buck, buy the MC. Those are 5 quarts where the others are gallons. Tractor Supply "Mystic" is made by Citgo oil. Gotta read the labels and look close. The "Travellers" line will work in a 7.3, but not what you want in a 6.0. At least it wasn't the last time I looked at the API ratings.
