Here's the math and what I practice
Yes, Extended drain intervals. And changing the filter at regular intervals in between. I change at 15k
3 dino oil changes at walmart every 5000 miles costs about $198 at $66 each
1 synthetic oil change and 2 extra filters and 1 gallon oil for the 2 filter changes costs $144 at walmart
Here are the facts:
Rotella Synthetic has the proper ratings for the HEUI injectors which is an API rating of CF-4/SH or CG-4/SH or higher.
Rotella Synthetic Ratings are as follows. Note it does NOT have the new CJ-4 rating for the '07 and newer diesels.
API CI-4 PLUS, CI-4, CH-4, CG-4, CF-4, CFAPI SL, SJ, SH
Cummins CES 20078, 20076, 20071
Detroit Diesel 7SE 270
Mack EO-N Premium Plus ’03, EO-N, EO-M Plus
Volvo VDS 2
Fleetrite, Navistar P/N CH1824392 or Lubrizol 888 anti-foaming additives can be added if worried about loss of the foaming agents between changes. I have not had to use this but Navistar dealers do keep it on the shelf.
Here is MY personal observation...
I have well over 1 million documented miles in 8 years driving Semi truck and trailer OTR. I have owned 4 class 8 trucks and always run Rotella. Never had a major breakdown or oil related failure. IMHO Shell Rotella, Dino or Synthetic, is good oil and I don't give a rip how good their advertising campaign is. It's easy to get just about anywhere too which is a plus.
Most of my driving it country roads and interstate, little city driving. My trucks start better and run quieter on it. Soot control in the oil is better and running synthetic media filters the oil would still be clean and clear well past 3000 miles when the dino oil was black. I have never had a problem with the HEUI injectors when running it. I see visibly less metal particles in the oil whe I change it. I will continue to run it.

There's been no angry mob so far nor do I intend to be the mob's representative but if any of you have ever tried to start a diesel in the -40°f range you will see that there is definetly a need for "thin oil".

i havent been able to start ANY diesel at temps that low, heui or mechanical, unless it had a heater.

how long to the glow plugs stay active?

Up to 2 minutes depending on the engine oil temperature. The glow plugs will still be on after the light in the dash goes out so don't use that to judge the time they stay on. You can usually see the voltage guage move slightly higher when the GP relay shuts off but it's best to check with a volt meter at the relay.

Ever heard of ether? A little shot in the intake works magic on a diesel in -40 in the middle of the bush! But try and do that with 15w 40 in your oil pan.......not gonna happen.
If you wanna know what is best in the winter put it outside in the cold and try and pour it. Even the 5w 40 does not pour as easy as a 10w 30. I'll be putting some 0w 30 rotella in my truck soon as the oil change comes up. It cranks a little slow on the 5w 40 rotella. And I do have brand new batteries.
