Oil Leak at EBPV Actuator

When I replaced the turbo on Monday I noticed allot of oil at the EBPV rod going into the pedestal. I think I remember reading that these do go bad and can leak down the back of the engine and the bell housing. Well that is exactly where I have oil under the truck. It is not in the valley, bone dry. I can see the dirty oil from the pedestal going down the back.

What can I do to fix this? Is there a kit or do I not want to know the fix?

I hope to purchase the SPDiesel exhaust brake at some point, didn't like the home made job, so jutting and plugging is not an option.

Thanks for the help.

There is a kit, heres the PN#

Exhaust BackPressure Valve Actuator Seal Repair Kit

(Ford) 2C3Z-9P466-AA (98-02)

Make sure its not your turbo pedistal o-rings that are leaking. The EBPV actuator should leak into the valley before it runs down the back of the block.

PN# for pedistal o-rings;

Turbo Pedestal O-Rings (between pedestal & block; pedestal & turbo)
(Ford) F4TZ-6N653-A & -B
(International) 1815560C1 & 1815561C1

Thanks for the reply. I will look into the kit.

I just edited my post to include a picture. To me, still the untrained, it looks as if it is "blowing" from the rod and onto the exhaust up-pipe.

When the time comes though, it will be the kit and pedestal ring too. Don't want to take the turbo off anymore than I have too.:D

When mine leaked it sprayed oil at the passenger side uppipe, and there was no oil in the valley. You could just gut the entire thing. There's another article in the WIKI for it. It costs less than $10 to do if you have the tools required. Mine did not start leaking until after my first of many turbo removals. I guess I messed it up when trying to line the rod up with the pin. Like Mike said double check to make sure you didn't pinch the o-rings since you just had the turbo off.

Actually, this was all there before I ever touched the turbo. Sorry I was not clear on that.

Then it is the EBPV rod seal. Gut it and be done with it. There is tons of reading all over the web about the subject. Short sweet to the point story:

The international motors do not even have them. Many psd owners in northern climates are running without them with no difference in warm up time. You can buy an non ebpv pedistal in the $200 range. You can modify your existing pedistal for around $10 if you have the tools. My truck is running on the modified stock pedistal and the write up is in the WIKI. I have had several comments that I did not need to reinstall the pistion after members have read my write up. I did it this way because I read, from internet experts:rolleyes: , that the piston removal may actually drain the oil away from the turbo bearings too fast, if removed. There are others running no piston with no problems. I plugged the wiring back in on my truck but still get trouble codes for the ebpv. They are of no concern though because they do not throw a CEL. If that bothers you there are site sponsors that sell code eleminators to resolve it.

That may not seem like a short sweet story, but I just saved you 2 months of of your life (reading) that you'll never get back as someone I know likes to say:cool:

my rod looked exactly like that, I pulled mine off before I had a big problem of loosing oil. I gutted the exhaust brake as well, and left out the piston. been running now for over 2 weeks. everything seems fine without the piston in there.
