Ok,,, I have read the postings on filters and oil changes, and received some good information. Anyone know when it would be safe to change to a synthetic oil? Has Ford or International made any suggestions on mileage before switching to a synthetic? I am at 2400 miles on the odometer, and plan on changing oil every 5,000 miles. I like the idea of Motorcraft oil filters and IH fuel filters. One post suggested going with IH 1847170C92 fuel filter kit. IH has a different number for the 6.0. What's the story on that? This is a very good website, and it's nice to have so many people to brain storm with.

well if your going to stick to 5k oil changes.... dont waste teh $$$ going synthetic
HOWEVER ,,,,,, if your going to run a bypass filter and do oil sampling to determine oil changes, then go for it, you might get 10k from synt. oil. HOWEVER,,, teh best oils are still breaking down in shear wt at around 6k
this is because of the way we use oil to fire injectors, HIGH pressure and weird cycles, it just plain breaks down (the additive package) oil itslef doenst wear out, its the additives that leave us short.

maybe we could just inject another additive package to replace what gets used up....

My thoughts are that the synthetic is going to reduce friction, wear, and heat.
This would offset the higher cost to me. I would just feel better when in the future, climbing a long hill pulling a heavy load, knowing I had synthetic oil in the engine. Anyone pulled the hill outside of Bishop California going North with a heavy load? That would be a real test.
