Odd Clutch Problem

Well up until now my clutch had been working fine. But as I entered Las Vegas on a trip from SoCal, I noticed my clutch was acting differently. It doesn't engage until higher up on the pedal travel. The bottom inch or so of pedal travel does nothing. Once engaged it still operates fine with no slippage. It's like sudden, instant clutch wear, because it was operating fine when I got off the freeway at Primm. Clutch fluid is full, oil is full, what is going on?

That sounds like the plastic bushing between the clutch pedal and the rod to the master cylinder is broken or missing. This is an easy fix. See the post above.

Normally when the bushing is bad the clutch won't disengage he is having trouble with it engaging. It sounds like the clutch is about wore out but since it happened all the sudden I wonder if the pressure plate or dual mass flywheel might be coming apart. Any strange noises at all?

No odd noises. I am sure I have a notched clutch fork but that was there already. Also has a slight vibration at idle after running on the freeway, but again has always been there and has actually lessened since I changed the oil and air filter.

After being told by other people in another forum to look under the inspection cover, I saw this-

It looks to me to be new. I wasn't able to move anything, so I am guessing it has already been converted to SMF. I wasn't drenched with oil and neither were the parts, so no rear main leak. Can anyone tell me what they think?

That looks like a single mass flywheel, but I would not bet my life on your picture. You should take it apart to be sure.

I wasn't able to move anything. Even if it was a DMF, no movement means no play, which would indicate a correctly operating flywheel, correct?

What do you mean by "move anything"? The clutch has some heavy springs that hold the pressure plate from slipping when engaged, so you would not be able to move it without taking it out. No amount of screwdriver prying will move the clutch so you can tell if it is slipping.

I was told that a dual mass flywheel had two parts, and if you could move the two parts past each other more than 5/8" then the flywheel is bad. I couldn't move anything, so that counts out a bad flywheel.

thats definitely a single. a dual mass looks just like the same set up, only difference is that there 2 flywheels together. the one closest to the engine has the teeth for the starter. thats what i have. i'll send pics soon. 5 bolts hold the secondary to the primary. yes there is play between the two. and yes there are also 5 springs.

like i said, thats a single and no there won't be any play in that set up. i was able to turn mine with a screwdriver(granted it was a pain in the butt) and thats how i got to all of the eight pressure plate bolts.
