Over the weekend my OD light started flashing after driving for a long period on very icy roads. I had started out in 2nd 2h each time and was not going faster than 30mph. When I finally made it to open HWY and accelerated the light started flashing but it shifted fine and when I touched the trans pan and cooler lines they were cold to the touch even after 60 miles of 75 mph driving. The light did finally stay off after 60 miles and never came on.Any help would be appreicated :dunno Oh and the atf was not burnt or dark

A blinking OD light means that the tranny has set a code. You will need to get it read to see what is going on. A good tranny shop can do this. I can't tell what is wrong without reading the code.

I've never seen or heard of a flashing O/D light for tranny fluid being cold.

When your O/D light is blinking, is there anything abnormal with the speedometer? Does the cruise control function correctly?

Probably one of the most common causes of a blinking O/D light is a bad vehicle speed sensor in the rear differential. Typically when they go bad, you'll have the other indications like I asked about above.

What TG sez about the VSS, and being an 01.. ? for $30.00 and 20 minutes of your time, you might wana just replace the VSS..... cuz, at about 30-35 MPH, is when the VSS data/signals, via the PCM, start effecting things like.. the Tranny, Speedo, CC and ABS.

you were on icy roads and it came on. were you spinning out alot, when you do that for awhile it sets a code off too usually your abs light comes on not a tranny od light. its just saying that your front speed sensor is getting a diff reading than the rear then after a bit it goes off again. just my 2 cents

I had the OD light flash on our 02 Excursion a few years back,I took the VSS out and blew it off with a can of compressed air which cleared it of metal shavings from the gear ring,I also zip tied it down(X style) to prevent it from coming loose.

when the the trans detects an internal slip it will signal the o/d light to flash, the last time mine did it, it gave me a 3-4 shift error code. i have been told by a couple tranny guys this is pretty normal with a stock trans.
