I flushed it really good when I added new coolant. my thermosat housing was really rusty and gunked up . I'm ordering filter tonite or tomorrow. also bypassed the heayter core ...wow that makes a difference in air conditioning temp.

Well, that ties it, then. The gunky stuff was probably casting sand. You're doing the right thing with the coolant filter.
