Noise that sounds like a tire going bad. New tires, been checked. Have changed front wheel bearings, they needed it and U-joins and carrier bearing. No slack in rear axel bearing that I can tell. Suspect pinion bearing possibley. Any known issues with the rear diff. 2002 F350 Power Stroke? (Hyper-Tec stage III program.) Archives does not come up with anything on the search for pinion bearing problmes.

for the five minutes it will take you to pull the cover,
just pull it and take a look.

Well it's Dec 27th, finished changing out hub bearings today. One had wear but this did not change the noise. Bearings did have somewhat of a black look to them. pulled the fill plug and had some build up on it. Rear diff may have been run to hot at some time. I guess it is tear down time for the whole diff. It is really hard to tell where the noise is coming from. I am thinking the rear but who knows. Does not change in or out of overdrive. Less on acceleration but comes back to same when speed levels out. Back to drawing board

If it is throttle related accel vs. decel, sounds more like a ring&pinion noise. Most of the time if the noise will go away on accel, and come back on decel, or vice versa(it can go either way depending) that's what it will be. Good luck...

Pulled the backing plate today on the rear diff. Spider gears have marks on them, Not smooth. Consderable scratches. Ring and pinion not marked as bad. Some small scratches. Looks like it has been run without oil at some time. Just bought truck a few months ago out of Florida. Drove it home and had no noise then. Put 3000 miles on it and noise showed up. Find another rear or rebuild the one I have?? Costly I bet.

Either way you go will be expensive. Just guessing from costs I've seen on other rear ends R&P 150-250, and a rebuild kit(bearings&Seals) 75-125. Of course that's if you do it yourself, and that doesn't include any new spider gears. IMO, if you didn't find chunks/shavings of metal floating around in old fluid, I would probably just run it til it blows. Unless of course you saw like some cracked gears or something. Were you able to snap any pics of the marks on the gears?

I did not think about taking any pics. Should have. Price a gear shop locally and the price went from $1200 to $2000. Does anybody know if the older model F350 rears will interchange. Thinking about finding one at salvage yard. Thanks for all the help.

im having this same issue too...just changed the rear diff fluid about a year ago and everything still looked brand new in there. Have not towed since then.

Mine sounds like its coming more from the front. It gets louder as you gain speed.

It truly sounds like mud tires that are worn out...just a constant wawawawawawawawawawawawawawawawawawawawawawawa...just had the tires rotated and balanced and its still there.

Any other ideas?

Make sure that the NUT on the rear-end yoke is tight. I had one come loose and the yoke fell off. This might cause the noise you hear.
