No A/C at low RPMs

Just finished a 900 mile trip from MD back to FL, and had an A/C issue. At low RPMs (1250ish) and speed (45-50ish) the A/C seems to turn off. If I get into the throttle and kick the RPMs up the A/C kicks back on. There was no issue at all with the cruse on doing 70ish and 2000RMS - system blew cold for hours. I scanned the other A/C related posts and didn't see an issue like this. Any ideas?

Check the freon. It sounds like your low. My dad had the same problem on a trip I went on with him. I put a can in and it was good to go.

mine is doing that too...but not quite as bad i dont think...just seems to be warmish for a while and out of no where start blowing cold...

little off topic, but i saw in autozone last week the black refrigerant cans with the gauges...any experience with those?

Some may us them but I messed up a AC once so I just pay the big bucks and
get someone to do it for me.

An Update. Lat week I removed the shim behind the A/C clutch and the A/C has been blowing ice cold ever since.

That's good, been to hot this summer around here not to have a good AC.

If you find you have a leaky A/C system, pump out the old Freon and install Red Angel, then recharge with Freon. Red Angel was recommended to me by an A/C tech at the dealership, he says that it hasn't failed him yet and if my wife's car is any indication of the stuff's effectiveness, I must agree. It saved me a $1500 repair job to replace the evaporator on my wife's Ford Focus. You can now hang meat in that car, it gets so cold. Got my Red Angel at O'Reillys.

Did you have to pull the clutch off to remove the shim? I have heard of this before and now my '01 is doing the same thing. If this doesn't work I guess I'll get the gauges and vacuum out and troubleshoot. I guess a new clutch wouldn't hurt either since it has 235K on it.
