Backing the truck across the front lawn yesterday...had 2yrds of mulch...
didnt wanna spin the rear tires backing up the front lawn...

(ive got ESOF 4wd)...the truck would go into 4hi but not 4lo....i tried
it in netural & park and w/ my foot on the brake...nada.

obviously i dont need 4w lo 'round here much and i do run it in 4w hi
once a week or so (just to make sure its workin')...but i rarely drop it
into 4wheel low.

anyone have any ideas where i should begin ?

you can remove electric motor from transfer case and try shifting it manually. then you can see if the electric motor is moving all the way....i had problems with mine just last week. i think prevoius owner diidn`t use it much...i also had a hard time getting out of 4lo, but finally came out after backing up for about 300ft...but since then i have changed fluid in transfer case, this should help also. old fluid was dark in colour...

just random thought spewing forth:

-did you wait a few seconds before engaging in a foward gear to see if it would grind....maybe the dash lite is out.

since you had 4 hi, what made you want to use 4 lo? would not 4 hi been enough? gut instinct on wanting to use 4 lo, or have you had issues w/ it b4 and wanting to check it out? being a landscaper, 2 yds. of mulch isn't that heavy?:santa

red -

i think ive found the problem (ill get to it in a sec).
2yrds, on *MY* front lawn...and i backed up...i didnt
want to risk a spin (and tearing up my lawn)

our front yard has a fairly good slope to it...4hi was
plenty, your right, but 4lo would have been great only
cause i wouldnt have had to hit the throttle at all...just let
the idling engine creap the truck up the hill (backwards).

no problems w/ transfer case or engage/dis-engagement of
4wd, hi or lo (ever).

now to the solution....or sourse of the problem...
ive been having a problem w/ the park/lockout...cant
get in gear (even w/ foot on brake)

the lockout is tied to the brake light switch (but ive always
got brake lights)....the switch is loose and basically its
pivoting on its mount...bump the switch (i can do it now
w/out even looking under the dash, using my foot) and
the truck will drop in to gear everytime.

did the same thing today (trying to figure out why 4lo wasnt
working)...truck in netural...select 4lo, (no go), bump switch, poof
like magic 4lo comes on !

guess im gonna have to change the brakelight/interlock switch !
