This morning at 9am I started the dismemberment of my engine/parts in search of my boost robbing exhaust leak. Both joints are loose and obviously leaking alot and both pipes were flopping around while I was removeing the turbo.

Since this is the first turbo I have ever held in my hand's, much less taken off, I don't really know what I have here. This turbo has 180k on it and I was wondering if there is anything I should check/mod/change while she is down.

I have been running my truck without the line hooked to my wastegate. It would only boost 14 with it plugged in. I have been planning to install a new wastegate actuator but now that I have found an obvious boost leak I am wondering if It is needed. Anyone installed a one? Is it worth the $$. BD has one for $150.00.

1. Check for any noticeable End play and/or wobble. Inspect the leading edges of the compressor wheel. Your call (?) but now might be the time to install a "Wicked Wheel" ?? Prolly moot but: Use ALL NEW.. O rings & gaskets when you put it back together. A little Never Sieze on the Up & Down pipe joints helps too.

2. Did you plug the W/gate (red) line when you disconected it ? If you did'nt, you could have been loosing boost there. And... Disconnecting the W/Gate will get more boost (?). But... during WOT or heavy throttle demands, Exhaust pressures can open the W/gate... un-controlled ( "lil Factoid no one wants to hear, or believe;):sly).

Jeff.

I have a BANKS actuator. I like it. My 2K will build 25 lbs of boost.. no problem, and shots of 30+ if I need it..

Big Joe, Thank you for your reply. I have checked the wheel and it looks fine. There is no slack and it seems to spin freely.

I purchased the gaskit's for the uptube joint. This "never seize", is it like a gaskit material that I spread around the entire joint to help stop leaks?

As far as the actuator, I think I am going to keep the stock one on but would like to adjust it for max boost. Do you know how.

2. Yes, it's a pipe joint dressing that will.. Never seize. If you apply some to the joint surfaces and bolt threads (?), if you ever have to dis-assemble them again,, they won't be Seized to one another. Good sealant too. Good Stuff.

3. Yes. Most stock actuator rod threads are crimped, but you can spray a little penetrating oil (I use PB Blaster, W/mart) on the threads.. Jig it up in a Vise, mark the threads for reference.. then (Go Slooow) adjust the rod >IN<,4 to 6 full turns. ( Your call but..Any more than 4 to 6 turns will defeat the design parameters of the OEM actuator.... In my experience's)

'Coupla 'ol guy izzums ? As you re-install stuff ? Tighter is NOT better.. use the torque specs. And.. as you go forth, in your quest for more Boost... yer guna need some sort of Boost Pressure Relief Valve/devise.... To keep yer PCM from set'n a code, going to a Defuel Mode.. and get'n a CES light. They're available from the SDD site sponcors.;tu

Up pipe

My 350 is in the shop having the up pipes replaced with the bellowed pipes. I had planned on having the turbo rebuilt while it was down but was unable to find the desired parts. That eventually lead me to DieselSite.com where I found a mechanical wastegate controller. I really am looking forward to having the old girl back. It sure ran like a screaming ape untill little by little the up pipes started leaking.
