Why, what is the elevated clatter of the diesel engine untill she wrms up? It sounds like exhaust manifold leak.

My 06 does not have a high idle switch that I can find, however when it is in the 40s if left to idle after start up, it will bump up to 1100 rpm on its own until I tough the brake.

I drive combo highway/town and even empty my mpg gauge slowly creeps down after reset to high 14s. I let her shift at around 1800 to 2000 rpm 90% of the time. Standard rear gear, 373 I think, 4x4 crew cab short bed F250.

12000 miles I thought I wouldmget better. I'm not concerned, because the power I get for the fuel used is great, just curious more than anything if something may be in need of a reflash or upgraded control program.

One thing about the truck that really is a pain, the factory baby jack is a joke. First thing I did was throw a good sturdy one in the tool box.

The high clatter is the noise that the engine makes until it warms up. All diesels do this it is part of the compression ignition. Doen't depend too much on your lie-o-meter (overhead console) for fuel mileage. It will get better after 15,000 miles or so.

There is no factory high idle switch, it's all automatic. You may want to add one (search here, lots of info).

And welcome aboard!

I bought my PSD Feb. 1, '06 and had it about 3 weeks before it got cold (North Alabama definition of "cold" = a positive number less than 50, YMMV), and I had to go somewhere in my PSD.

When I fired it up and idled it out of the neighborhood, I thought the dang thing was broke.

All the horror stories I had read on the interweb came flashing through my mind even though there was only about 500 miles on the odometer and the $32K check I had just written three weeks before had barely made it to the bank.

Very unnerving 5 minutes until it warmed up and the sound got normal again.

High idle switch: If you have the '06 and the upfitter switches, it's very easy to hook up.

There are actually two different kinds of "high idle". One is driven by the PCM when idling when cold and probably other conditions, since I don't idle much don't know much about it, think it's happened once with mine.

The other is one that you can control through your upfitter switch (if you have them and connect it accordingly) or any other switch you install. It only operates under certain conditions, which you can control (in nuetral, parking brake on, no brake activation etc.). As someone said look for the sticky.

Welcome to the site and the world of the PSD!

Thanks,

Al
