Just got the new computer today. vista operating system. So far it has not been seamless. Office 2000 Outlook does not seem to work on Vista. Here it is 1 a.m. in the morning and I am still working on this thing. Trying to remember all the passwords is something else. Time to go to bed... Good thing I am retired. My brain is getting fuzzy.

Yep--I'm waiting until I can get OS 10.5 (yes, I know it hasn't been released yet) and a Core2Duo processor in a Mac Mini and then I'll pull the trigger on a new 'puter. My old machine is puttering along but it's not long for this world so I'll have to buy a new one sooner or later (probably sooner) and I definitely don't want another Windows box.

10.5 (Leopard) looks kick butt, I bought a 20" iMac back at Christmas and love it. Core2Duo, 2 gig RAM and the best monitor I've seen. Color profiled it by eye and when I got my calibration stuff it was almost dead on.

I was talking to a guy last night who's a sysadmin for a large local realator and he had nothing good to say about Vista, said he'd probably need therapy when it was all done.

I'd love to get an iMac but they are a little pricey for me right now, especially given that I just bought a snazzy 21" widescreen HD LCD monitor 8 months ago. I checked what that model display is going for on Ebay and it doesn't make any sense for me to try selling it and then buying the iMac since I wouldn't be able to sell it for nearly the price difference between the iMac and the Mini. The Mini fits 99.5% of my 'puter needs (dorking around on the internet, writing papers for school, iTunes, etc...) since none of them are particularly demanding.

Vista will be a good OS... in about 5 years, once they have the bugs... err security features worked out. Microsoft released vista to RTS status way too soon.

It's pretty, but that's about it. I'll stick with my OS X.

jharvey, Leopard will have pretty much the same GUI, so it will look about the same. Granted, under the hood there are new features, but that's about it.

Any guesstimate when 10.5 will be released? I figure Apple probably wants to play around with Vista a little to see what Microsoft has fouled up and incorporate those fixes into 10.5 so they can say "If you're tired of messing around with the XYZ function in Vista, take a look at 10.5 and see how smooth it works doing the same thing...".

Apple says "spring of 07" Frankly, I don't really care if they release it in summer of 07. The only two cool things I see and like in Leopard are the "time Machine" app (whopteedoo, I have my machine back up my documents folder nightly to my desktop) and my entire boot drive once a week. The virtual desktops look cool, which I already have on this machine. It's just a separate app, and not integrated with the OS.

Apple is prolly playing with vista. They would be fools not to be. A lot of the stuff msft has screwed up in vista, they've just disabled. No virtual directory service? Please, that's the dumbest thing they've done.

Don't you all worry, I'm sure soon, eEye, twarte, and other computer security firms (let's not talk about the white hat hacker groups) will be releasing Vista security flaw bugs galore.

I'm waiting more for being able to get a Core2Duo processor as an OEM option than for 10.5, although 10.5 does look to have some neat widgets available. Yeah, yeah, I know I could buy a Mini now and swap processors for a Core2, but I don't feel like going through the hassle of taking a Mini apart (it looks to be no fun at all) to swap processors on a brand new 'puter.

Widgets? There are thousands of them. and if you can't find an apple widget you absolutely, must have, try yahoo widgets (the original widgets), and see if its there.

I'm waiting till they start shipping MacBook pros with the 4 core processors.
