Tymar Question

I think I want to do the Tymar air filter mod. When I looked at the stock box on my '99 I see a sensor inside. What do I do with this factory sensor (air temp. sensor?) that is wired into the stock filter box? What about the stock filter restriction guage? Does this Tymar get oiled and re-used or just replaced? Does it need a support bracket and if so what should be used?

Any drawbacks to doing this? How noticable is the improvement?

Thank you.

Is it needed?

i just read on the General Discussion section that the stock air filter provides more than enough flow fo the truck. Shhould I even bother with replacing my stock air filter system that currently has the K&N drop in filter?:dunno

The factory air filter box has had a lot of issues with bad sealing. The tabs on the end of the top are prone to breaking off, especially if one isn't paying enough attention or in a hurry (i.e. oil change places). A K&N filter won't fix those short comings because it uses the same factory box.

For those on a budget, a home-grown Tymar or open-air style element is a decent option. If you don't do a lot of summer time, heavy towing, it is a good way to go. It'll draw in air from under the hood, which can be an issue while towing. It was for me, which is why I changed to a Ford AIS and a Zoo-dad mod. The AIS/Zoo-dad takes in cooler, fresh air from the grille area which tends to allow everything to run at cooler temps.
