i am looking at a 2002 F250 7.3 PSD 4x4 with about 100,000kms on it. I am not to familiar with this truck and was wondering if anyone had any hints of what to look for (abuse, regular problems etc.).

I was looking at it the other day.....is it normal for the idle to raise up on it's own when sitting in Park (cold outside). If you touch the gas pedal it idles down....but if you leave it a minute it revs back up on it's own.

Also when it is revving high, it sounds like just a big rush of air coming from tailpipe....is this normal?

Any help is appreciated! I like the vehicle but just don't want to get burnt.

Yes, the high idle is normal. In winter operation when the parking brake is enabled and the truck is idling for 2-5 minutes (time may vary) the truck will idle up to prevent wet stacking as ford calls it. The rush of air coming out of the tailpipe is the factory exhaust back-pressure valve doing its thing. The EBPV is a butterfly vavle that is bolted onto the exhaust side of your turbo that will close to help warm up your engine. The wooshing sould go away once the truck is warmed up.

You might check for oil leaks in the engine valley. It is common for the o rings in the turbo pedistle to leak. Not a big problem just makes a mess.

welcome to both of you... if you get a chance, post an intro in the intro forum. This is a great place to get help and advice.

A great place for a list of things to look for when buying - about a 1/4 way down the page ---> Click here

wlecome to the site
you may also look at the HP lines on the HPOP which is just behind the fuel filter bowl.
they are wrapped in black stuff and the o rings have a tendency to leak right at the pump and again over at the heads where they plug in( screw)

but the 7.3 in 02 was I think a great engine. never had any engine issues other than normal wear and tear stuff
tranny may be on the issue side if its been hot rodded.
how does it drive???

EBPV problem

I had the same problem with the EBPV. Mine was bad, I could drive all over town (usually around 20-30mins) before mine would quit making that wooshing noise, no matter what the temp guage read. Sometimes it would not quit. I kept throwing codes 1. P1670 EF Feedback Signal Not Detected 2. P0471 Exhaust Back Pressure Sensor Circuit Performance 3. P1249 Wastegate Fail Steady State Test. So I replaced the wastegate with the banks big head. Didn't fix it:dunno Then I went to replace the EBPV sensor, and noticed that the tube coming up from the manifold was broke so I replaced both the tube and sensor(factory parts not exactly cheap) Didn't fix it-mad I heard about a sensor bypass from another site so I bought it (only like $35.00) and still no fix:cussing: Finally I figured out that if I just leave the sensor unplugged I have no problems. Not the solution I was looking for but seems to work for now. If anyone has any suggestions let me know, PLEASE!!!

thats some weird stuff with the wastegate, mine makes the same sound when cold, some people look at the truck all stupid when its warming up cause youll get that whoooooosh then...stop...when the wastegates doin its thing, lol.....pretty funny, part throttle i get the woosh all the time, obviously since i'm not in boost, when i first got the truck i thought sumtin was wrong, then i realized what the sound was, lol....course the 4 inch downpipe magnifys it a little now, :sweet

course back to the original intent of the thread, only other thing i'd check is popping the oil fill cap when its runnning and see if you got any excessive blow by, i think someone had mentioned that in another thread....

Woosh sound all the time!

OK, here's my story. I just put 5in stacks on my 2000 F350 dually last week. I really like them but I get the wooshing sound all the time and it's really loud! I guess I should say nearly all the time. It will stop if I let off or step on the go pedal, but at cruising speed it never goes away, ie, riding through town at 25 mph, cruising down the highway at 55 mph, etc. However, if I remember correctly, last week when I put the dual stacks on the temp was fairly warm (over 50 degrees) and after the truck warmed up it would go away. Anyway, do I have a problem? I really don't know much about these trucks but I am trying to learn. Thanks to all.

Thanks everyone for the input!

I took it for a drive and it seems ok. It rode down the highway at 120km/hr with out any hitch. The weather was pretty crappy so I didn't get a chance to really go ver the vehicle.

There was no fifth wheel or plow mounts installed....so I hope it wasn't plowed or towed anything heavy. The interior was a little rough but nothing that some elbow grease probably wouldn't t ake care of.

What should I check on the tranny?? Is there anything that would help show signs that it may be on it's way out?

Also wondering....were the 2003 with 6.0l PSD any good. I know it was the first year for 6.0 PSD and was wondering if it was a problem year while they worked out the bugs.

By the way...this is an awesome website....makes me want to buy the truck just for the heck of it!:thumbs
