New to superduty use. I purchased a 2001 Crew cab DRW 2wd to tow 18k FW.
the truck has Superchips Inc 1700 Max Tuner which was set to "performance".
When pulling hills during down shifts the engine redlines, I think it is a transmission issue, am I right? If it is I was thinking about a John Wood trans, any comments. JW is only about 2 hrs away, but everyhing that I have read he is the one of the best.

I think what you are experiencing is a programing issue. Sounds to me what you are describing is what was called "RPM flare". There were several PCM reflashes that Ford put out to address that issue among others.

A lot of us 7.3 die-hards don't use or talk about Superchips much. The "go to guys" for tuning are folks like Powerhungry performance & DP Tuner to name a couple. They have tunes for economy, mild, medium, wild performance and tunes for towing medium or heavy loads at high or lower altitudes. They can also tweek your tunes to adjust for individual issues. Superchips chips is a bit of a dinosaur when it comes to 7.3 tuning.

thanks for the input. That is what I thought about the Superchips, after reading the threads concerning DP tuners.

Trans temp gauge only. Besides EGT what other gauges should I have?

After 1hr with a Ford dealer finally found the Temp limit for the 4r100, but they really didn't know. And EGT what limits should I know about them?

Gauges are nice but if you don't know what normal is, what is too high they are worthless, this info is not readialy available, that is why you guys with the experience can help us newbies, before we tear things up.

Thanks alot.

Most folks go for Trans temp, EGT & Boost gauges.

IIRC 1200* is about the EGT max.

Trans temp of around 100* over outside air temp is about normal. 7.3's had a tranny cooler that was too small. Shortly after they came out, a common mod was to swap it out for the tranny cooler used in the v-8/v-10 trucks. It was about 50% larger. Later one, after the 6.0 came out, folks started installing the tranny cooler used in 6.0 trucks. It was even larger.

I have a v-8/v-10 tranny cooler with an aux cooler about 12" square. In stop & go traffic while towing, I think the highest tranny temps I ever saw were around 190*-200*. In the winter, the gauge doesn't even register usually. The rule of thumb is for every 10* you can reduce the tranny fluid temps, you double your tranny life expectancy.

that matches the Trans temps I finally got form the dealer. but I have watched the temp gauge really closely the highest temp I have seen is 180, pulling FW up 7 mile 6% grade. I changed the trans fluid, after 4000 miles the fluid looks like it had 80000 miles on it. Was told that maybe I have some trans slippage which would darken the fluid? Never saw that in my mh (300hp cummins diesel with Allison MH2000 trans) Really am confused.

What would be normal for the EGT?
