ndsuperduty how goes the repairs or diag on the truck, i have seen and repaired several of these problems on the 6.0l thast is my full time job , as the lead diesel tech with a local ford dealership in ohio. the test can be done in your driveway but not with a standard coolant tester you will need to adapt the tester to go into the small degas hose from rad to degas bottle and pressurize system to 16 psi , the jack rear of truck up 2' and remove egr valve and let sit under pressure for 45 min to 1 hour, while looking in egr hole to see if coolant is present in manifold, if it is it is the egr cooler leaking if not release pressure and reinstall egr valve and leave tester in stalledbut doo not put pressure to system start the truck and drive under heavy load while watching pressure gauge if it does not level off at 18 psi , or climbs higher than 18 the head gaskets are blown. hope this helps, i do have a tool made to do this test easily if you need let me know i will tell you how to make it for under 80 dollars.

bigdog, thanks for the help but honestly that sounds a little to involved for me. I could probably do it mechanically, but I really do not have time to work on my vehicles anymore. I am going to look at the egr myself, and if does not look like the problem I am going to drop it off at the dealer/mechanic. I only get one day off a week right now, and I would prefer to spend that day with my family rather than messing with the truck.

i bet you could pull the egr and determine if moisture has gotten to
it...again let me know...im happy to help <kids are gone for 2 weeks>.

ran my programmer today and it pulled code PO284. according to a search i have done this is an injector issue. Not sure how this would relate to my coolant issue and excessive smoke when warming up though.

P0284 -
System Grouping: Fuel & Air Metering
Cylinder 8 Injector Circuit Contribution / Balance Fault
--------------------------------------------------------

well this is a bit mysterious...'specially w/out any other codes.
are you running a tuner ??

certainly if the injector is OVERFUELING it could cause some
tail pipe symptoms (i would expect black but w/ only ONE
injector having an issue it might not be BLACK).

wonder what a buzz test would show... or an egr
cycling test....all are available at no cost to you ;)

i am running the superchips programmer but at the lowest level(safe tow). Mainly I wanted it to recalibrate my tires, and it would not let me recalibrate without putting it on a tune level.

The programmer said 1 or 1 codes found. So unless it missed one that is the only one showing.

As for the EGR test you mentioned bush, would it be better for me to pull the egr first or run the test first.

I'd leave it in there and see what the test yields, if it comes up blank for results then take it out and look at it. Don't disturb anything that might give more odd results. Check, then start pulling things out.

I had the pleasure of meeting up w/ Ryan this morning...no codes
when i connected my autoenginuity...i stepped thru some
KOEO & KOER tests and in the middle of the running test it started
running rough & generated a low circuit voltage on injector #2.

As if we needed the code to tell us anything other than WHICH injector
was acting up (sticking maybe?)

anyone know if there is anything you can add to the tank as a shot
to possibly clear the injector ?

the injector clears out pretty quickly w/ just a lite application of the
throttle.

if we were to pull this injector is there a way we could test it (in or
out of the engine?)

the egr valve wasnt what i would consider dirty at all...it has some
shinny flakes on it but for the most part is was just dusty...
and it didnt show any signs of serious moisture.

clearly the interment injector issue is whats causing the smoke...
itll be interesting to see if the potted plant that was next to the tail
pipe lives ;)

it was good to meet Ryan...together we fumbled thru and install his recon
led towing mirror turn signals (that his MIL bought 'em)...

anyone ever change an injector on a 6.0 ? what kinda price we looking
at for the factory injector/parts ? how bad a job is it to get that valve
cover off ? (seems like theres a ton of stuff over top that drivers side
valve cover).

Ryan - lets figure out what this is gonna run you (in parts)...and
we can probably do it here in my driveway...you buy the beer for
the AFTERWARDS ;)
