Ok guys I got a good one for yeah and I need some help as to what you all think the problem could be.

A couple weeks ago a buddy was driving driving down the road in his 04 6.0 PSD and it died just like you turned the ket off. So he had it hauled to the local Ford stealership to get it fixed.

The next day they called and told him the HPOP was bad and he need a new one at $586.00 and he said OK fix it.

Well they ordered it and called him back two days later and told him they got the new HPOP on but after they installed it they were looking at the old HPOP and figured our what had happened to cause it to go out. They told him it had gotten three needle bearing in it and that they trashed it out.

He asked where the needle bearings had come from and they told him they came from a roller liftter that had came apart. Then they told him the roller lifter had 50 needle bearings in it so he still had 47 left floating around in his motor.

He then asked them what was the next step and there response was it had to have a new motor put in it at almost $14,000 (for a short block) because all the little needles floating around would continue tearing stuff up in the motor if he tried driving it the way it is. But, the funny thing is they never even said anything about the roller lifter being bad hurting anything such as the cam.

By now he was wanting to take it else where for a second opinion so he asked them if it was running so he could come get it and drive it home. They told him they never even tried to start it after they seen the needle bearings. He said well good then take the new HPOP off as he was not paying for it and they told him they could not since it was installed.

So he went up the next day to get the truck and argued with them about paying for the pump when it was still new and finally one of the service guys told him that they did turn it over a little so it had oil run through it and it was no longer new.

Well he just bit his tongue and paid the bill and loaeded the truck up and brought it home. After he got home he noticed that the invoice said nothing about a pump and that they had charged for and IPR only. So now he is really pissed off and calls them on the phone and asks them WTF the deal is and they tell him the pump was not bad that the IPR was bad and they replaced it.

Now the truck is out in the driveway and still apart as FORD did not put it back together before he picked it up. The only thing we can see they done was take the drivers side valve cover off and it is still laying inside the truck.

OK all you 6.0 guys lets hear what you all think of this little mess?? What would guys be looking for and where would you start?? Is the the whole needle bearing story possible??

We are needing some help here and I have came to all of you for that help.

Please let me know what you think.

Thanks

I assume that the 6.0 has the same warranty as my 7.3...............

Unless he has already put 100k on the clock in 2-1/2 yrs all the work is covered under warranty and his out of pocket is $100.00.

The repair should be on Fords tab unless they have voided his warranty for some reason.

Well if he had a warranty then I would not be on here asking for some help.

The truck has WELL OVER 100,000 miles on it.

So lets hear what you all think the deal is???

Thanks

Yes, definitely possible. I have heard of a few lifter failures. Not as many as head gaskets, but a few.
Mine would have had one, I replaced the motor before it got that far, at 200k, exhaust lobe on cam was worn down like 3/32". The roller on the lifter was chewed up some and needles would have let loose soon. Here's a pic of the cam-View attachment 2209
I would ask to see the needles and the damaged HPOP.
I bought a reman LONG BLOCK, from powerstrokeshop for $7200, and did the install myself.
I was going to rebuild the original engine myself, but for that price with the warranty, it wasn't worth it.
After hanging around here awhile, I might have done it and made a few improvements. :sly

Well while doing some diagnostic work and checking ICP pressure the truck started after getting all the air out of the high pressure system from them changing IPR.

Not sure why the said the pressure was low and would not start but it fired up and purred like a kitten. This thing runs like new and has no noises so my buddy is sending out tomorrow on a 1000+ mile trip to see what will happen.

He did have the oil changed today and there was some fine metal shavings in the oil filter. I guess we will see what happens.

Thanks

Well truck pulled a load of boats to Alabama today and is on its way back home as I type. So fare around 700 miles this trip and no stumbles or snags yet. We will pull the oil filter tomorrow and see if there is anymore metal debris in it.
