I have a 2000 SD 7.3, my problem started about 2 months ago with a bad starter. I put a new starter in it and all was well for a few weeks then out of the blue it wouldn't start. Every now and then it will start fine, a few times I was able to get it goin by holding the accelerator to the floor while cranking. 90% of the time it will just crank and crank but won't start. I did a little T/S of my own and found the fuel pump was bad, I replaced the pump, filter and drain o-rings. I got my fuel pressure back but it didn't help my starting problem. I have a sneaking suspision it's either a leaking injector o-ring or bad actuation pump. Any advice or suggestions are much needed and greatly appreciated.

first off- WELCOME!

if you suspect leaking injector, check your oil. low? high? does it smell like fuel? leaking injectors can be disastrous. eliminate that

check your fuel bowl before cranking- take the top off. if it releases a little pressure and spits fuel, its probably ok. if you have air, then you are leaking air in somewhere.

what is your fuel tank level? below 1/4 tank, you can suck air. look at doing the hutch mod. look at the articles in the wiki.

any spots/leaks under your truck?

do you get the wait to start light? can you hear the relay clicking? glow plugs?

First I want to say thanks for the reply. Yes I have checked everything you metioned. Oil level is correct, No fuel in oil, no oil in fuel, fuel bowl and HPOP reservoir are both full, no pressure or vacuum from fuel bowl cap when removing, it's got a full tank of fuel, I had one leak from the fuel bowl drain but fixed tha t and yes the WTS light comes on, but the only relay noise I hear is one under the radio that buzzes when it's not going to start (sorry, forgot to mention earlier). If the relay isn't buzzing I know the truck is going to start. Once again, thanks for the help.

Sounds like you have a bad, or 2 bad batteries. I had trouble getting my truck started were it would make a buzing/clicking noise from a relay or solenoid. It ended up being a bad battery, and about 8 months later the other battery went bad.

If thats not it, maybe check the CPS.

How old are your batteries? Could well be the culprit in this case. Change them both, if you only do one you risk killing the new battery when the old one decides to give up the ghost.

X3 on the Batts.. and clean-up and inspect ALL the connections & cables too ! Replace if corroded or worn.

If you still have the origonal CPS (?) I'd just replace it :dunno

I finally got it goin I think. You guys were right, it was a bad battery. I had load tested them and they both tested good, but come to find out my load tester wasn't putting enough load on them to get an acurate test out of them. I put two new ones in it this afternoon and it has been starting fine since. I'm just hoping this isn't just a day it's deciding to start lol. If it persits, be assured i will be back for more info. Thanks to everyone who posted, I appreciate it.
