I got my late 99 intake covers on my early 99. At the same time I ditched my Banks EGT & Boost gauges for some Autometer types.

The Banks EGT gauge had the pyro probe post turbo in the down pipe.

With the new Autometer gauge, I put the new pyro probe in the driverside exhaust manifold.

I had been using about 950* - 1,000* as my max safe temp with the probe in the downpipe.

What do you guys recommend as a max safe temp with the probe in the exhaust manifold?

on my 7.3 i used 1250 pre turbo as a good point to start really paying attention and when we got to 1350 i backed off the throttle
i did however see some spikes through 1400 :D
but wouldnt recommend it, pistons once get hot enough to melt do so like solder and will liquify quite fast.
i can look up tomorrow the melting point but i found depending on the alloy it can be as low as 1250 and as high as 1600 soak, but momentary spikes may or may not yield failure. I have no idea what the pistons alloy is, I suspect it is of the 5000 series cast, but thats pure speculation
sort of like sticking your hand in a fire it doesnt burn right away, but wait a few more millisecnds and you light up:D :D
